There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness"

RIP Arthur, you have been a hero of mine for many years, one of the first ever Sci Fi books was his. Great man, great vision. I am happy he will be remembered forever by the belt carriying his name.
I saw - 2001, A Space Odyssey - when I my father took me to the cinema. I was four at the time.
(Probably explains a lot)
There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness"

He was the first to suggest the idea of geostationary satellites. He gave us our hobby![]()

2001 was the first film I ever saw in the cinema as well
RIP ACC

I reread some of his books a couple of years ago - some of the story lines hold up remarkable well despite the passing of the years.
I do like the idea of the manned tv relay orbital stations in some of the books![]()
Another legend passes on. I saw 2001 at the Abbey Cinerama in Liverpool gawd knows how many years ago. Blew me away and I went and bought the LP (yes LP) which I still have.
Read just about everything of his over the course of the years. You always tell the quality of his writing and the deepthought that had gone on before pen was put to paper.

By the way, it wasn't Arthur who first came up wit the concept of permanent sats, it was George Smith who wrote a series of stories called "Venus Equilateral". This fact was also acknowledged by Clarke, who even wrote about this in Georges book. But they were both pioneers. It's a bit like America, discovered by Colombus but named after America Vespucci

Very sad to hear this visionary has passed away. I have to say though his innings was one of the longest going and filled with so much discovery and pioneering work.
yes,
very sad news for the world.but I'm bit proud also, because he lived with us in this beautifully island.may the nibbhana be the final destination for him.
He is leaving our world at the speed of light.
I´ve read (I think) all of his work
Great writer![]()
Very sad to hear that.
He played a large part in my life when I was growing up, after reading his books which were fantastic.
Arthur C. Clarke, You will be greatly missed R.I.P.
Great to read the tributes,I hope it not true that that he not the 1st to realise significance of geostationary boo hoo, another of my myths biting the dust?I think some of his ash,s along with gene Rodenberry(creator of original star trek, were sent into space. International spacecraft/station,all colors&creeds aboard, what a silly vision of the future He had !! Lol People all over world, now having to tighten their belts,Lets hope Arthour is watching over us kindly ;-) We can call it tightening our Clarke belt ! ;-)
may he attend Nibbna
