    My System: hotbird/astra 19 NOKIA 9902S

    Nokia 9902S / Canal Plus /Aston Crypt

    Hi,
My Nokia 9902S has worked fine with TPS for 2 years. Then I thought it was time to go for Canal Plus last week.
Had to buy a new cam, and subscription.
New CAM Aston crypt DVB-CI /2557 and a card for basic Canal Plus but the 9902s software ad 3.1 (otherwise untouched) just does nt respond. comes up with a channel one on all channels and thats it. Take the cam out, after switching off and everything is fine.

The Hotbird and astra dual feed work fine without it. Just only have free to air now.

Any ideas? Or is the nokia "end of life" ?

Look for the latest firmware for Nokia 9902S and upgrade (Use Windows 98 only). If your AD 3.1 is the latest, then it looks like your Box doesn't support this particular CAM or the Canal Plus encryption.
Can you see the CAM and smartcard details OK when you browse the CAM menu?
If nothing helps, then look for a cheap receiver with Seca embedded CAM or try another Seca CAM.
Can you show a picture of this CAM?
My Nokia 9800S didn't like several CAMs like Magic CAM and caused the box to hang after insertion, just like what you have described here.
But worked OK with Aston Crypt.

Don't worry about your box. I don't think it is the end of life.
These boxes are well designed and the parts used are of high quality.

There is another possibility. The CAM might be faulty.
Did you buy it from a reliable shop and new or secondhand?
Does it get very hot after a while when it is inserted in the CAM slot?
What is the smartcard encryption? Is it Mediaguard (Seca) or Viaccess?

    My System: hotbird/astra 19 NOKIA 9902S

Used an old aston crypt v1.05 and it works

    Hi,

Thanks very much for your help.

The aston crypt CA module I bought with the canal plus didnt get hot, light worked but the machines just locked up. DOnt know what version it was maybe 1.07

Anyway, I phoned the supplier _www.tvcorner.com, and they said canal plus need a aston crypt CAM and even an older one would work.... which it does :-)

The said they 'd reimburse me for the newer CAM that I dont need and does nt work.....

I m very happy with the Nokia 9920s and dont want to change.

So there is a black cloud over this new version, I ll try and get a photo of it before I send it back.

    Thanks for the help!

    Hello mick264,

I am glad that your box is working with the old Aston CAM.
I had a look at the Nokia 9902S and it is like my Nokia 9800S but has in addition a 40GB HDD. This is an added advantage to continue using it.
Please make a picture of the CAM of both sides.
May I ask about the price that was paid for the smartcard and which option did you order?

99 Euros for the aston crpyt (latest and greatest) (funny card that falls apart
344 Euros Canalsat basic 13 months

Sent it back already and the scanned in image on the photo copy didnt come out I m afraid.
Tv corner gave a very good service though.
    Just one problem remaining.....

the Perso button on the remote control. I dont have one. Anyone know a way around this? On the www.canalplus.fr site they say you need to press this button to get the PIN menu.... but with a nokia 9902 you dont have one.... I ll keep looking an update if I find it.

    aston crypt 2

Hi it looks like its the new CAM that doesnt work, photo attached. You can see it on
    http://www.totalsat.co.uk/astoncrypt-cam-p-69.html

This makes me a little concerned as most of it seems to work with the old aston crypt. Why do they recommend the new one. Seems to be downwardly compatible. Maybe my CAM was duff? Maybe not and Aston crypt2 doesnt work with Nokias 9902S.

Attached is also the Canal Plus Perso code. Its a separate code, not like the parental Nokia 9902 option. Dont know how to get around this as I dont have a Canalplus unit or remote control. I guess it send it s code or something.

Still researching the perso code (PIN code), but everything else works fine.

    Thanks- mick

    Thanks for the info.
    Regarding the Aston Crypt CAM:
Aston (the company) is offering now the new CAMs, so you are lucky to have an old one around.
Just check it's firmware and consider to update to the latest via a certain channel on Astra. Might be a little bit risky.

I think the Nokia parental control would be able to put a PIN code on any channel, but since you have the standard subscription, then I really don't see which channels need to be controlled.

    Nokia 9902S & CAM's

Some Nokia's 9902S don't get along with CAM's. When you put the receiver on standby, the data lines to the CAM remain active, but the 5 Volt line to the CAM is turned off, and when you power it back up, it's not recognized by the receiver, and can cause damage to the CAM(the eeprom inside the CAM can be corrupted because the power is removed from it with data lines still active)! But there is a fix to this. All have to do is a little modification to accept it.

Check this site with great instructions here:_h**p://hjem.get2net.dk/nokia_dvb/

The reason I'm saying this is because I have a Nokia 9902S which did not accept a Conax CAM. After the modification, it's been working almost every day without any flaws. If your good with a soldering iron, then this mod is very easy to do. The components were a total of about 0.50 Euros!

Thanks rato for the information and the fix.
I have a similar problem with Nokia 9800S after inserting Magic CAM and I saw a fix on another website (I think in lefdata), bought the parts and I am just too lazy to do the modification.
With the Dreambox, the need for CAMs has become minimal.
