Subtitles with non Sky Satellite receivers

I've been beating my head against a brick wall trying to get an answer to this. Is there anyone with a non Sky receiver that can sucessfully receive subtitles on FTA chahnnels, notably ITV. I have a Humax PVR9100 and the only way I can receive them is to select Text Page 888 on my TV. Sadly this is less than satisfactory as the subtitles for ITV in particular are useless, half missing and out of synch with the spoken word. A technical chap from Humax "thinks" that subtitles can only be satisfactorily displayed with Sky proprietory software. If that is so then there are going to be a lot of unhappy people when analogue TV is switched off!
All and any help gratefully received.

My System: Pace Sky HD, DM7000s, CubeRevo 3000HDPVR, Transparent 80cm Dish, Moteck SG2100 DiseqC motor, lots of legacy gear. Meters: Satlook Digital NIT, Televes H45 Digital Spectrum analyser.
Just checked on the dreambox 7000s, same problem, ITV lags by a couple of seconds or more, not sure if there is a solution. Whilst it is annoying for those without a Sky Digibox or Freeview receiver, they are probably pretty much in a minority.

I can get the subtitles to work (dont know if there in sync or not) but I can not get ordinary text on ITV. comes up with four coloured squares for quick access and that's it. just hangs when I type in a number.

Do you mean the teletext pages on Itv. No sign of them with me. The BBC I know do not Have the pages on Digtal except with a Sky Box. Cannot understand why seeing as you have to pay your TV lience even if you dont have a Sky box. My Samsung Rec. Covers the WHOLE Screen in black when you hit the teletext button. With no lights on you can just about make out the picture . Its a joke. John.
