My System: Humax FTA pointed at Hotbird. looking to buy a PCI sat card.

Multicast and Unicast options on my Sat box

Hope someone can point me in the right direction here.

I have a Scientific Atlanta Satellite receiver 9834 with an ethernet port. I've successfully given it an IP and can access it's web interface (all it does is change the channel).

The IP menu also has the option to configure Multicast and Unicast I'm trying to figure out if this is reception or broadcast? Either way I can't get it to take any IP settings, it always gives and error "IP out of range".

Do any other Satellite set top boxes have similar options? IP, multicast, unicast?

My main reason for asking is that I'm hoping to run the satellite data stream through my HTPC.

    Any ideas?

    Hello

    welcome to the forum LocoS

I am afraid I know nothing about Scientific Atlanta receivers but a search of the forum shows this thread which may or may not be of help. I was under the impression these were stb's were used in conjunction with powervue encryption which if you were not registered on their data base would not allow you to view encrypted channnels or are you just wanting to view Free To Air.
More acronyms HTPC what is that WTF is that then ?

    Topper thanks for the reply.

The reception on the box is working fine. What I'm trying to do is feed the signal into my Home Theater PC before sending it to my TV. I was hoping that the multicast/unicast menu option would let me send the mpeg 2 stream via my home network.

Other wise I'll have to go the traditional route of using a tv capture card to do my recording.

Is the multicaset/unicast option common on other stb's?

I have never heard of such a thing in an stb but I have to confess I have limited experience of other receivers and no experience of home theatre systems, perhaps someone else can help
