DM 500 internet through Mac mini

    Hi,

I am trying to connect the dreambox to internet using my mac. I have connected the dreambox to my Mac using a cross over ethernet cable. The mac is connected to the wireless router. I have enabled internet connection sharing on my mac.

    DM IP: 10.0.0.150
    DM netmask: 255.255.255.0
    DM Nameserver: 10.0.0.9
    DM Gateway: 10.0.0.9

    Mac ethernet IP: 10.0.0.9
    netmask: 255.255.255.0

    Mac airport (wireless) IP: 10.0.0.3
    netmask: 255.255.255.0

    Router wireless IP: 10.0.0.138
    netmask: 255.255.255.0

Since this isn't working there must be something I have left out.

I have been reading the idiot guide and other sites on the internet in order to try to sort this out myself, with no luck.

Is there anybody out there that has the same setup, or that might be able to help?

The Dreambox is tricky enough for the beginner. Honestly, buy a router with DHCP.

I do have an Apple Time capsule and also another router I can use. However, the modem and wireless router is on the second floor and the living room is on the first floor. Use of cables between the floors are out of the question.

Do you suggest that I connect the dreambox and the mac to a router on the first floor and then connect this setup wirelessly throught the mac mini to the router upstairs?

Yes thats sounds like an easier solution. I would design your system around the DM being connected to a router.

with 10.0.0.x netmask is 255.0.0.0 is class A is for large private networks consisting of thousands of computers
with 172.16.0.x netmask 255.255.0.0 is class B is for private networks of medium size
with 192.168.0.x netmask 255.255.0.0 is class C is for small private networks

    use 192.168.0.x is better
or connect your dream with dhcp option

If he were not a wizard, from head down to the root, you would have got to worry-your DB only boots
Have you configured the Mac to allow Internet Connection sharing?

10.0.0.n or 192.168.0.n will make no difference - it's your LAN.

A router will no difference unless the Dreambox is connected to the router rather than to your Mac and personally I use fixed IP addresses not DHCP.

Thanks everyone for your assistance. Okay I got it working but I'm not exactly sure why... In the end it seemed as though a reboot of the dreambox was what did the trick.

I did set it up with an Apple time capsule (router) between Mac mini and dreambox. The Ip on Mac mini ethernet, dreambox and time capsule are now in the 192.168.2.xxx range, while the main wireless router upstairs was kept untouched with IP 10.0.0.1. This setup didn't work either at first. But I checked with a PC connected instead of the dreambox and voila.. It had internet connection. After a reboot of the dreambox it was all working.

After I got it to work with the time capsule, I removed the time capsule and now have the dreambox connected directly to the Mac, with a standard ethernet cabel and NOT a cross over cable.

    This is the current setup:

    DM IP: 192.168.2.2
    DM netmask: 255.255.255.0
    DM Nameserver: 192.168.2.1
    DM Gateway: 192.168.2.1

    Mac ethernet IP: 192.168.2.1
    netmask: 255.255.255.0

    Mac airport (wireless) IP: 10.0.0.3
    netmask: 255.255.255.0

    Router wireless IP: 10.0.0.138
    netmask: 255.255.255.0

    Now onto port forwarding....
Dreambox is turning out to be a full time hobby

with 10.0.0.x you must have 255.0.0.0 not 255.255.255.0
