Warmer Winters

Being a Yorkshireman, I am immune to the vagaries of air temperature and will happily wear a string vest and flip-flops even in the depths of Winter.

Others are not so lucky, so I just thought I'd share with you today's task.

DiY Loft Top-Up Insulation (170cm):

Lots of offers around at present, all subsidised via Energy Companies - but the rolls are often out of stock and are too bulky to purchase in quantity and take home in the family car.

About three weeks ago, I saw the nPower/Build Center (sic.) offer for half-price Rockwool with free Delivery and a Safety Kit (Goggles, Gloves, Face Mask) thrown in.

Despite having to shout very loudly to get them to meet a reasonable delivery timescale (the offer is heavily subscribed), it came last Friday. Three pallets, totalling 29 rolls.

I pencilled in today to make a start and was dreading it ............


.......BUT:

The Rolls are lightly wrapped with a tear-apart seam and you can get them roughly into place, part the seam and finally position them with the wrap loosely in place (preventing complete unrolling) before sliding it out from under.

Very little exposure to rockwool fibres.

Also, the rolls can be cut down from 1.2m widths into 60cm or 40cm simply by applying a bread knife on dotted lines printed on the wrappers. Extremely quick and easy.

Did about half my loft space in two hours (Leaving the rest until next week) and am in smug mode.

I commend this potentially unwieldy and itchy task to the house - It's a doddle!

What is wrong, have we run out of sheep for wool so much so that we have to make wool out of rocks

Fibreglas insulation was the big itch not Rockwool, that from memory was more of a dust inhalation problem.

Still not a nice job at any time of year in any conditions IMHO.

OT, first time I insulated our first home it was the depths of winter and I gleefully finished after quite a few hours in sub zero temperatures, came down the ladder and went to wash my hands and realised my gold wedding ring was missing, yes you guessed it next day I had to take it all up again ...but I did find my wedding ring good job too as I may have been laid to rest prematurely

...I can only assume that there is more than a few CCs of Yorkshire blood circulating through my veins ..
I point blank refuse to turn the heating on until December ...regardless of how cold it might get ...and then I insist the thermostat is set such that it barely counteracts the cold .
If you can breath out without condensation in the air ...then the heating is set too high ...
My lot are all 'Nesh' ...and wont even wear the horse hair long-johns I've got 'em..
I wouldn't mind ..but I often let them warm their hands on my candle ...come Christmas.

Pah, Ive got a flat roof house so no chance of shoving artificial wool in any cavity, and the Saunier Duval 620 boiler ensures there's very little hot water at any time of the year.

Still, the bills are cheap and they light up the living room a treat once in the hearth, (and I get three times the paper if I withold payment for a month).
