I'm sorry for my big post but it is the first time i try to upgrade my NOKIA 9800s and I
have a problem, so i want your help. I have little experience in upgrading receivers but
I'm good at computers.
(Another sorry for my bad English...!)
So I have two options :
a. Upgrade via Serial Cable
b. Upgrade via Satellite
I tried both but I had problems.
a. Upgrade via Serial Cable
I searched a lot and I have found many sources providing firmware and tools.
I have also read many conversations and tutorials.
The result : I have not upgraded my receiver yet.
I'll let you know my system configuration, what I want to do and what I am doing (maybe
wrong) to upgrade my receiver.
- My NOKIA 9800s has the MA 1.31 and BootLoader 200.
- I have found the MA 2.0, the SerialServer and i have bought a null modem cable.
I thought that these were enough.
- I started the procedure :
i. Turned off the receiver, disconnected it from the power supply, removed my card :
My receiver is ready.
ii. I have a computer with two COM ports; they are free. Changed the parameters :
bits/second: 19200
data bits: 8
stop bits: 1
parity: none
flow control: hardware (or maybe none)
: My PC is ready.
iii. Connected my receiver with my PC (receiver is off), started the SerialServer program,
opened the image : SerialServer is ready.
iv. Clicked 'Start download' and I got the message 'You need to restart the set top box to
start downloading.', plugged in the power supply.
v. My receiver started, showed 'd200' and then '--:--', the above message disappeared and
the download meter began. Download freezed (actually not started) : 0.0%. After a while
I got the message 'Not possible to download, the set top box is not responding. Check
that your set top box is connected and press "Start download" to try once again.'.
vi. Stucked.
Note : I tried both COM ports; I have changed the parameters on both and I have selected both
in SerialServer.
So I aborted this method.
b. Upgrade via Satellite
I searched a lot and I have found many frequencies to download from.
I found them in old forums or in old documents. So I am not sure if it's me who have the problem
or the old frequency which may be outdated or stopped transmitting the firmware.
This is what I am doing with the "old" frequencies :
i. My receiver is fully connected and it has all its features enabled.
ii. I can only use HotBird 13E for this procedure.
iii. Entered frequencies manually (freq., pol., sr, fec, I am sure this procedure is correct) and
searched for new channels.
iv. New channels found. Went on the appropriate channel, then Menu, ..., Receiver Upgrade. (I am
not sure if this step is correct.)
v. 'There is no software updates available.'.
vi. Stucked.
After all, I thought some possible reasons which may cause the whole thing go wrong...
- Damaged or wrong cable. (Its bag says 'NULL' so the cable must be correct. Maybe damaged?)
- COM port failure.
- Missing or wrong software.
- Outdated BootLoader version (I have read it somewhere... I am not sure if this is correct)
- Old frequencies.
- much more
and finally (maybe the most important)
- Lack of knowledge.
Please help me. I really appreciate any reply. If you think you cannot help me directly giving a
clear solution just write in full detail the correct procedure or an old or new frequency.
Sorry for my big, big post but I think I have tried everything!
Haven't I ???
Thank you all for reading this!
Thanks to Kostas1
Upgrade your Nokia 9800S
1. Save the files SerialServer.exe and the download file sysSW.dl in the
same directory. Make sure that the Set-top-box is disconnected from the
power supply and no other program uses the COM port you wish to use
for the download.
2. Decide if you want to use communication port COM1 or COM2 and
press "Options" to set the right port. Also make sure that the following
communication parameters are set in the control panel, port settings:
* bits/second: 19200
* data bits: 8
* stop bits: 1
* parity: none
* flow control: hardware (or maybe none)
3. Press "Open Image" and select the file that should be downloaded to
the box [typically sysSW.dl]. (This file has been created with dsmcc_tool)
4. Press "Start Download" and plug in the set top box.
5. Wait about 15 minutes until the download is complete. The front
display will indicate how many percent of the download that is still
remaining.
6. After the download, press "Exit".

GOOD MORNING,
Please study the possibility of recommending sites where I can visit in order to obtain firmware updates for Nokia 9800 S (one slot for viaccess card + a cam slot)
I am badly in need of a specific Cam for nagravision 1/2.(to be utilised on 68.5* East.
Thanks for the attention you will give to my request.

By The way, is the version M2.0 for internet media purposes. Will it be

My sat sysatem is to receive only.
Would welcome your advice.

GOOD morning,
ARE you satisfied with the version of firmware you have installed ?
If any minor difficulty is expected, please let me know ?
My demo is 9800S .MA 1.3. Have been struggling to get advices whether
to updatye that version.
Best Wishes,
yours respectfully,
kadnor
Hi Kadnor,
MA2.0 is much better than MA1.3
The major change was that it is now possible to use a timer to switch the box on and off to any channels. Helps with recording.
The problem is that this firmware update was only possibly through the satellite and by switching on to a certain channel on Hot Bird 13E.
It was not offered as a file that can be updated using the RS-232 serial interface.
I am not sure if this is still possible since Nokia has stopped giving support to to the MediaSat recivers a long time ago.
If the box is working well, then leave it on MA1.3
As for Nagra CAM, there are many on the market, just browse the internet but make sure that it will be supported by 9800S.
There are other new type of CI CAMs which support Nagra, but 9800S may not regognize them after the install.

If you want the MA2.0 software, you can either PM T24 for the software, or in post #81 someone posted a link to a site which has the software available for download (I just checked it and it is still there and downloadable). My personal experience of going from MA1.3 to 2.0 is my box went from being fairly slow and, to be honest, rather a dissapointing purchase, but after I updated it, the box was like a completely different box, it was much faster, it changed channels quickly, and it had a few other features that appeared which weren't there in ma1.3 (I forget what they were though!!!)...![]()

Thanks 2cvbloke for the link.
@ kadnor:
If you are going to upgrade, remember that you will be doing it at your own risk. Hope that you have experience with upgrading sat receivers.
Need a PC with Windows 98 and a null modem cable.
DON'T try the upgrade with any other O/S.
The uploader software is included in the zip file.
Disconnect all cables from the box (LNB coax, SCART, RCA, etc)
Switch off PC and 9800S (pull out the power cord), and only then connect the null modem cable.
Good Luck
Hi Guys.
Just after a Quik Answer.
Living Downunder in New Zealand, Have just obtained an old Nokia 9800s Receiver, in Mint very unused condition.
Have upgraded it with MA 2.0 Firmware and find the box works well, but is not the quikest to respond to Remote commands etc.
Is there by any chance a preferred firmware that gives the box good overall responce.
This box is being used for FTA services, so no need for any special CA menus etc.
On comparison to my older Nokia 9500s, the 9800 being a newer box runns like an old Humber 80.
Any info would be great
Cheers
