    2D in Cyprus - Frassle

    Frassle

In a different thread here you've told me that

I'm in the south of Cyprus so I'm a bit closer to you, we are probably only 100 miles apart. Presently using a 2.7 and picking up 2D. Struggling with an 80 metre cable run though. Like you I tweak this adjust that etc. I do have a digital analyser on it but 2D is just under it's threshold. When I was using a 1.8 I would use 11740 V 27500 2/3 and that would usually work sometimes with channel 4.

    Thanks for that info Frassle.

I've already got someone looking out for a 2.4m dish to improve 2A signal quality - the FTV channels I can see at the moment have (occassionally) had picture lock.

The signal strength I'm getting on the 1.8m is about 60-70% according to the Grundig decoder. I'm thinking of changing the cable to a higher standard (someone told me RJ12 cable - but I'm yet to do my homework on this!)

Are you picking up 2D (BBC channels) on the 2.7m dish in Cyprus. If you don't mind me asking, where did you get it from and how much was it?

If you are receiving 2D I think I'll put the word out to try and find a slightly larger dish (although legally I think Egypt restricts it dish size to 2.4m - anything larger could disrupt National Security!!)

    Please let me know.

    Cheers

    Hi Richard

Bought the dish locally here. I can now pick up all the BBC channels and now ITV. Solved the problem of the evening fade so I get it 24 hours now. Now tried a 2.7 offset and a 2.7 prime focus. Slightly better results on the prime focus but they both work. The lnb is 0.3 invecom, use anything else and the picture breaks up.

    Hello frassle,

May i ask you where on Cyprus you are and which receiver you are using ?
I heard it makes a difference where you are trying reception and so somewhere in the northern part of the Island a 4.2 prime focus is needed.
I am trying to collect info for the greek online sat-magazine
    www.satleo.gr
since sky digital reception is asked from many people and now especially the BBCs and ITVs.

    Would appreciate any help.
    Thanks a lot in advance.

Best regards, Chris - Stuttgart, Germany.

    DEAR RICHARD,

I live in Limassol and i have a 2,4m dish with wings which extend it to 3,2m I use an Invacom 0,3db twin LNB and I have a Panasonic TU-DSB 30 receiver. I cannot receive and any channels from Astra 2D and I was told that I should try using a quad LNB Invacom 0,3db by an installer that has tried it elsewhere on similar dishes and seems to work. I think that it is because of poor dish alignment since at some hours during the evenings I seem to have problems with 2A northbeam also.
I would like the opinion of an expert on this.

    Thank you,
    Christos Pavlou

    Hello Chris
Sounds like you have had some advice from my good friend George.
Since he says,he has had result on similar dishes i suggest you give it a try.

sorry to butt in here.. but id just like to go on about how important skew is for 2d, like many people are finding. if its off by a mm or so you can forget getting it. With similar equipment to your neighbours, its sounds like it could be the culprit

also sorry but why would a quad 0.3 lnb make a difference from a twin of the same type?

    @indios
I have been puzzled by this also,so i asked..
This installer friend is claiming better results with quad invacoms than singles.
I havent tried quads so i cannot say otherwise.
But i must say i cannot reason this claim.

Our old friend George recommends the quad lnb because it gives a slightly better quality signal and he is right although I have to say that if you do not get 2D the quad will not help. I have heard that the East side does have bad reception

I am in Paphos. I use a variety of receivers. Presently using a pace microbox because its small and handy for carrying around. It seems to be a sort of average sensitivity so its good for testing.

    New Installation Help!

I live in Limassol and want to view BBC and ITV. Currently viewing BBC Prime (!) on a Strong SRT4300 Box (I have also been given a Pansonic DSB20 Digibox).

    Quoted for a 3.8m dish.

Is this the best dish size? (I want a continuous signal)

What's the best manufacturer for dishes of this size?

What's the best make/specification LNB for this purpose?

Would either receiver work (for FTA) / which one is best ?

    Cheers

As far as I know Limassol receives a better signal than Paphos so a 2.7 would work fine.
Re the FTA boxes I have only used Sky digiboxes so I don't know.
The Invacom 0.3 is the best for this
I can put you on to a company in Limassol who won't try to sell you the largest possible dish

Since i am involved in the conversations here i will wright also!!
Yes it is true that i changed a few lnbs on big prime focus dishes and had a very good result with the quad invacom lnbs with a special adjustable feed(The adjustable feed makes the difference on balancing all the transponders)
2.7m dishes along the Limmasol beach work fine.Going up towards Pareklissia and Ayios Tyxonas FORGET IT!
From Pissouri towards Paphos 2.7m work fantastic(In Paphos you dont even need the Quad lnb.The single is fine!
I have also put a couple of those lnbs on 2.4m dishes with extensions and were ok but that also depends how the flaps have been put! That becomes 3m and not 3.2m
My friend ICEMAN hasnt got a problem since he has a 4.2m dish
Any questions i will be happy to help!
    Best regards

    Here I am again,

After playing around with my dish mainly with my elevation and a little bit with turning it left or right. I used for guidance the signal strength bar of my Manhattan 5500 receiver. I managed to get signal from Astra 2D (the bar from red became yellow) and was even better than the bar that I get on Channel 4 frequency (and I have to say that I get C4 clear and uninterrupted). The freq 10744H comes out a bit better than 10773H and 10832H which are slightly worse. This strength stable almost all day around apart from 9pm to 10pm. The problem and the reason I write to you is that although my signal strengh seems OK I get hardly any picture from ITV or BBC and can hardly listen to the FTA radios on 10744H. Why is this? Why is signal strength better than C4's freq and I can't get any picture

I can't wait for an answer.

The signal strength is not as important as the signal quality. The skew does have to be very accurate. I've found the best way to set the skew is a x-pol check on the actual transponder you are looking for.

The type of digibox doesn't matter too much, Ive used a variety of boxes and don't detect much difference between them apart from that initial sensitivity.

The type of lnb is very important. Some work much better with certain dish types, and even the feed horn has to match.

The receiver is TU DSB 30 the lnb is a twin Invacom 0,3db and the dish is 2,4m with wings that make it 3m. I think that as mentioned before a quad Invacom would do the job since it gives better signal quality I decided to give it a try.

I have to disagree with you on this one frassle.
I wouldnt touch a PACE skybox with a stick..
Their tuners are weaker than most.

I think you are being too general there. Some Paces are rubbish as indeed some Grundigs, but not all of them. I am using a Pace microbox, mainly for testing and it's fine.

The "adjustable feed" is made of two parts..The neck & the ring.
The neck is threaded so that ring position can be adjusted without altering focal distance.

I have tried one of these

I tried one of these feeds which was on a friends dish, in pafos.
result in my case on 2.4 famaval, screwing in and out produced the same results as moving all the feed in and out and the same as a fixed feed.
    Anyone else found the same.
