hi --
Encouraged by the result using a 1.2 dish in march this year -- http://www.satellites.co.uk/forums/topic/157980-685-east-test-setup/ ) post 22,--

and rising to the challenge - i decided to get the Alcoa 1.8 down onto the yard and set it up for C band and point it at 68.5 east (elevation 2.4 here) as with ku band here, the signal slowly rises and then fades back to zero .
i tried all 3 C band l.n.b.,s that i have - and an old chaparral co rotor with the plate removed --- it gave the best result - a full 1.0db better - than the others .
the signal from 68.5 E reached its best peaks around mid afternoon and i got 2 short periods of lock of about half a min - just long enough to grab a picture of the 9.0 db lock - and scan the channels from 4155 V 22500 into the receiver .(encrypted channels , -- just my luck).
still getting signal tonight but just around 6.0 db now at best.

A lot of time spent today for a small result - but it was enjoyable -- l.o.l.

regards ----

..and now the bit where I say ..how jealous I am that you can see this portion of the arc with your alcoa ..
Sadly the only dish I have with a clearish view of 68.5 E is the TD88 ..
Congrats Nelson ..
Seriously good results.
Some pix soon perhaps ?...or is everything encrypted?

hi -
this setup with the alcoa is only temporary - it cant stay here long - just a few days
4 of the above t.p.s were clear but did not last long due to the fading effect --
need to go out now -- some pics later.

cheers --

hi -

tried scanning for horizontals this time -- picked up 4 t.p.s.

4117 H 3333 -- Samaa tv

4006 H 2990 Dunya News

3740 H 26590 N.H.K.

3974 H 19500 Zee Turner Mux (encrypted)

i,m sure more could be obtained , but the rise and fall of the signal makes it very hit and miss --- its becoming frustrating and time consuming - l.o.l.

non of the locked channels stay view-able for more than 1 min at best - then disappear for 5 min or more --
anyway i,v wondered for long enough in the past if it was possible to get 68.5 E - C band from here with 1.8 . so now i know that it is -- "sort of "

regards ---

cheers "pride"
its a shame you have lost your view of this sat --
being so much further south the fading effect would i,m sure , be much less.
i,m receiving here through a gap between buildings - and there is a small tree possibly affecting the signal --

fwiw I can see this bird in Ku with the TD88
but sadly not Christina.
Even in Ku the fading low elevation effect is very evident.
I can't even blame the TT ..
Christinas view is blocked by a 1930s semi ..so short of taking a JCB to the house ..this one is out of bounds to me in C.
Kudos to Nelson for giving us a taster.

Ku band is easy as long as you can see it. Yes, there are variations but I don't experience complete signal dropouts as it's quite a strong sat.

cheers Vipersan
its a pity about that semi being in the way - the extension panels on your "Christina" Alcoa
would help override the fading effect i think ..

i,v altered the dish to get 66 east tonight and can see signal from some transponders -
no locks yet -- but the peaks are improving as the day cools down
i,v played around with the l.n.b,s again -- but the co rotor (20k) minus its plate is still the winner with this dish on these 2 eastern sats. i expected the BSC-421 to be best ?

@ "Kveys" ---- do you receive any t.p,s from 66 east if so which is strongest for you ?

Admittedly 3845V strongest. Verticals are strong and horizontals very, very exact-skew need. Maybe most difficulty (C-band) satellite about skew. For e.g now not any of H give signal but still fine tuning work here after the dish move earlier. Strongest H = 3984H (FEC 2/3!). From pic 2 you´ll see frequencies catched here.

thanks for the info -- "Kveys"
i, going to connect up an old receiver to the co rotor - to get precise control of the probe position -- save me having to keep turning the whole thing to adjust it .

What about Intelsat 906 (64.2E)? At first when I started my C-band observation at last winter (eeehhee I bought mesh for christmas present for me :) ) I catched also 3765R/3720R. Since then only strong Tanzania/Mozambik (3642R/3654R). Can you check this also? Are there anything else than these 2 anymore really?

ok -
i managed to lock and scan 2 transponders on 66East - they drifted in and out of lock for around 15 mins only - i can see some signal from most transponders on this sat, H and V - but they never quite make it to lock -- just the 2 verticals

3885 V 30000 --- Sun tv network (all encrypted)

3845 V 27692 --- Tata communications (part encrypted)

the fading is slightly less with this sat - but overall its weaker for me here than 68.5 E

(screen pics dreadfull quality sorry - taken in a rush from outside monitor )

cheers.

Interesting idea to have plate removed, will try it, has an old corotor.
Must get just get lose my present corotor, the screw is properly secured, any idea how I will get the screw lose?
