Our family now owns a bicycle for each person, so its time to look at going out on them when the weather changes for the better.

The range should really be within 3 to 4 miles radius from home and since it would be preferable to travel on cycle paths as opposed to the main roads, I have looked at planning ahead online.

Streetmap does not have listings of anything apart from roads, and the dedicated sites appear only to show set routes defined with names, distance and calories burned, but no general identification of cycle friendly roads elasewhere.

Does anyone here have a link to a site which shows all the cycle paths in the UK, specifically Surrey ?

Thanks in advance

Thanks, Sustrans confirms just how few (and 'un'joined-up) the routes are around here.

Cycle-route.com was one of the first I looked at, superimposed days out on Google maps only, unless I am looking in the wrong section.

The Thames Path is quite good, it can take you into the centre of London and all the way to the Barrier without getting run over. Go the other way and you can get into the countryside.

Don't forget the canals like the Basingstoke Canal or Oxford Canal. You will find a lot of other cycle routes will branch off them.

Always take at least two tubes per bike, it helps if you can standardize on wheels and tyres.

Beware of paths suddenly cutting across a road without warning, often at the bottom of a hill or around a sharp bend.

I know there are many experts in this field ..such as Dr Robert Hare ...but didn't realise they had resorted to actually mapping the brains of Cycle Paths..

Have a look at Bing maps and select the ordnance survey option. That will bring up the OS 1:25,000 mapping for the whole of the UK.

Cycle paths are brown dots, green lanes are green dots, and bridle paths (best use MTBs on these) are green dashs

Round here we just get a Dr Beechings rail map from 1960, many cycle tracks and some roads emanate from these maps indeed a number have been or are now being converted back to railway use, i.e. the Todmorden Curve, Blackpool/Manchester Link. Housing is so scarce in Manchester now that Media City is up and running Blackpool has been designated commuter belt for Manchester. An estate agent recently told me about someone from the BBC who moved up after selling their apartment in London, they bought a 4 bed detached house in Lancashire and a gites in France and still had money for a top end motor. Cycling is a much healthier option but can damage your health permanently with all the tossers on the roads

Was being flippant. If Google had been around 60 years ago though, then I reckon MTB would have come up exactly as I said.
