Ive got a Triax 1.1m and a steel Orbital 1m.

The Orbital has been up about 5 or 6 years and is rusting a bit round the rim where the paint has fallen off Its got a good few years life left in it yet tho. The mount is plastic.

The Triax is a nice dish BUT anyone on here who has one will tell you the mount is an abomination. Its fiddly, tends to slip when you are moving it, is generally hard to adjust and is a royal pain in the backside to get adjusted accurately.

The Gilbys have a good reputation from the guys who have them

Orbital Aluminium will last as long as the Gibby, The Gibby oozes Quality and as AS stated the TD110 although may pull in that 0.5db extra the AZ/EL mount is diabolical

I have had an Orbital 1m up for approx 3 and a half years and it has been excellent, just added a Gibertini 1m out the back as well (previously owned a Gibertini 1.25m) and getting slightly better gain on the Gib over the Orbital

Both very nice dishes though

Agree entirely with Analoguesat.

TD110 is great when set up, but can be a swine to get the elevation bracket adjusted without a third hand. I've thought at times that I wished I'd got a Gibertini in the first instance.

Orbital also very good - had an 80cm one for eons. Some people look down their noses at them for reasons I've never fathomed.

+1 for the Gibby....have had a 1M one for ages. It was part of my motorised set up but now is used in the multisat set up. Very well constructed and reliable. Works well with a Black Ultra.

Yep, I did a double-take at the rear bracket - not something I'd seen before :D

triax_back_s.jpg

It looks like the paint could get scratched if it's repositioned more than occasionally.

As this will be a test dish, I want to reposition it every few weeks to get a feel for what's on the various satellites and move the setup around the garden (no single clear view of the sky). So for my purposes I guess that rules out the Triax. I'll probably end up with a motorised setup eventually.

I just need to decide whether to get a budget setup now and spend more money on a larger dish further down the road.

I also spotted a Maxx Digital 1m for £34.94 on ebay but what you get for that price is anyone's guess...

"me too" - I also have a 1m Gibi XP, very pleased with it. Solid construction, relatively simple to adjust.

Triax - good dishes. But I reckon on the 1m and above the adjustment would be a pain.

Anyone any experience with Inverto dishes? They look like rebadged Triax dishes but with normal adjustments at the back. Could be an option, I'm thinking of getting a 90cm Inverto (TD88 equivalent). They also take the Triax multi LNB holders which is a bonus.

You can see the back bracket on this page:

I have a TD 64. Mount is all galvanised steel. No paint.

The triax is not *that* bad.
A little different, yes, but I've used the TD64 as a travel dish for 4 years now, and it works ok.
Perhaps the smaller Triaxes are easyer to adjust... don't know.
But if you're getting a test dish, then you want a mount that is really easy to adjust.
Go for a non-Triax.
I just need to decide whether to get a budget setup now and spend more money on a larger dish further down the road.

You get what you pay for. Build quality, longevity, performance etc.

An alternative a used Channel Master off ebay. You can get the non-motorised for less than the prices you state for a new dish. CM120 are the most available. CM100 sometimes come up.
CMs are high-performance, and will not deteriorate (no rusting).
Downside is the pole, which needs to be a lot bigger (3") than what you need for the 100cm steel dishes.

As per st1, I'd sugget a 1m Channel Master second hand (I picked mine up as an ex-"Tooway" dish with a mount, LNB, feedhorn, T&K brackets and a long 3" pole for £18!). There's one on eBay right now. And with a little metal fabrication it can probably go on a DiSEqC motor. Otherwise a 1m Gibby as others have said.

Yep, I wasn't thinking. The Triax versions with a painted bracket will be galvanised underneath too - like the dish itself.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

Will also have a look at the Channel Masters.

Don't be put off if the CM dish looks a bit naff. I can't be dented easily, and it will be obvious if it has been mistreated. A good wash will clean it up nice.

Main thing to watch for is bents arms, or rust on the mount. The one CJ was pointing to was almost mint (unfrotunately it's sold now). And the CM mount is dead-easy to adjust. Top quality stuff, this.

Get a dish, throw away the tooway modem, either get rid of the Rx/Tx LNB and use a C120 with the feedhorn, or, for easier results, put an Inverto Black Ultra on it, and you're a happy man. (Then sell the feedhorn for good money, and recoup your investment!)

Is this to go on a DiSEqC motor? If it is I would go for a second hand Fibo 90 rather than any of the bits of tin plate mentioned in this thread.

Fibo 90 disappointed me, performance wise.. I don't know if it's because my dish was slightly warped (though I straightened it) or something else but I will replace it with the 1m CM .. not on the DiSEqC motor, though.

Besides, they are rarer than hens' teeth...

Some aforementioned dishes may be of less than rigid construction but I don't think you could describe a 1M Gibertini as 'tin plate'....
