Will the jack be in compression? Counterweight sounds like a good idea, especially with all the weight you have on that dish (extra LNB arms, 10 LNBs) and the dish itself isn't light by any means. Just...don't snap the motor or its fixing points under all that weight, including the counter.

Sadly no CJ ...the jack will be in tension ...which is why I thought a counterweight might be advantageous..

Ok ...got a 12 incher (Hopefully Jaeger) on order from HM ...for the grand total of £36 delivered..
Man, you were so fast today! I have 12 incher (brand new) with coax/power cable laying around. You could make a good deal.
2nd - I do not see need for such counterweight. Counterweight is needed to help motor (actuator) to move antenna from most-East(West) position. In your case, it will not work. Instead of counterweight IMHO it is better to use weight of antenna itself, you just need to lower it's center of gravity.

Guess I was a bit fast ..but sadly ..that's always been a problem with me ..impetuous..
Sometimes an advantage as it gets me motivated ..but not always a good thing.
;)
The reason I was considering the counter was to help ease the tension on the elevation jack ...but I guess it would only have any real advantage at the top of the arc..
If you think it pointless then I'll shelve that idea..
moving the centre of gravity wouldn't be easy ..though my exoskeleton adaption does a good job of tranferring the lnb bracket weight backwards to the motor and mount ring..
I'm attaching a full photo of my creation in profile so you get a better idea of the current state of play.

Whatever else it may be ..I'm very proud of what I've done so far ..
imo ..'tis a thing of beauty.

Cruising fleabay tonight ..I stumbled on this cheapy looking positioner ..
will work at 220v so looks ok for UK use...but have never seen one before..
I wouldn't use such a thing neccessarily for Azimuth control ..but might well be suitable for elevation since it wont get a serious amount of use..
BUT ...can't see a remote control included ..
So ..how can new positions be input without one ..?
Any of you guys seen one of these before ?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/301262864...7CR40%7CR40&_sacat=0&_nkw=301262864693&_rdc=1
I have sent the remote control question to the vendor ..and am awaiting a reply.
Well cheap enough if it will do the job ..
Looks a bit like a variant on the early G-box
anyone ?

Well HM certainly don't waste any time delivering ..
Jack arrived around noon..
So of course I had to fit it after work ..
Not applied any power as yet ...maybe... tomorrow ..
This can wait until I've fully checked over that everything will respond OK ...and moves freely..
Here are the pics ..
IF you see anything that constitutes a possible problem ..please shout out ...
I do make mistakes and prefer to deal with them before damage occurs ..

It doesn't look like you have the jack extended, at all, so you will only be able to move the dish in one direction, or it could be that I'm not seeing it correctly:)

Just caught up with this one. Some serious engineering being performed there VS. I hope it all works as expected. Not something I would attempt, it would no doubt all end in tears

No ..you are quite correct Mickha...the jack was just fitted fully close for now ....but once the dish is loosed ...I should be able to slide the motor rose clamp along the jacks outer sleeve to set a mid point..
Hope That makes sense ..and my reasoning is sound.

I should only need about 2 inches either side of the Mid or true Arc setting..

Had it moving ...and looks good ...
Centre point set on the arc now ..but limit for declination isn't set yet.
Luckilly NelsonB was on hand to monitor as I stepped the dish up and down ...2 sets of eyes is always better than one.
The assembly bobs about a bit as it is moving ..and we both agreed Carl will benefit from some box section pole braces...
So another job soon.
Working in some strong gusts and frequent showers ...but getting there.
Carl is back on the arc for now and totally supported by the actuator jack.
:D

From the STB just like with a DiSEqC motor.
..
That figures Huevos ..
But such a method is no use to me ...as I need to assign my own positions ...not neccessarily sequential.
So ..it may be cheap ..but not suitable for me ..
;)

That is a limitation of the software of a particular STB. On all mine I can allocate whatever position number I want to whatever satellite I want.

So ..some final photos of the build complete..
Mid point isn't actually mid point on the arc ..
I reckon I can do approx 4 degree below and about 8 degree above ..
Good enough for me..
Physical limits set so not expecting any accidents ..
It just remains to apply a bit of grease..
Cable now connected inside my playroom ..but only (as yet) have my old NEC positioner to manually single step the elevation.

..and relax ...
;)
