Just been having a play about today in South East Wales I can receiver RTE on a 97cm solid technomates dish with Triax KA LNB but it keeps braking up tried with my 1.2 and 1.0 cm KU channel master dishes but no luck with them as they are mesh inside the fiberglass which is no good for KA band so looking to try a KA band 1.2 cm dish I am looking for a Prodelin General Dynamics 3122 KA VSAT dish 3122-990 w/0800-4328 or a Global Skyware type 121 dish, Any one have any ideas where I can pick one of these dishes up from in the uk

What makes you think mesh inside fibreglass is no good for Ka band ?

As you loose signal due to the mesh holes the KA BAND signals are a lot higher than KU so smaller wavelength that is why they offer a KA band version of the dishes solid inside the fiberglass not mesh

There is a minimum surface accuracy that should not be exceeded with Ka band material, I think this is in the region of 0.14mm at the upper frequency to be used. If the perforations within the reflector are no larger then I cannot see how it should not be used in a composite design such as a fibreglass/smc reflector. The advantage would be the bonding of the material during construction, which would 'lock ' the active material into an inert structure.

There are two disadvantages of using solid metal on larger dish designs, weight being the first ( the thicker the metal the less signal passes directly through ( foil type thickness is not good at Ka frequencies) , the second is thermal distortion , or 'creep" which on a composite antenna will eventually break the bond between metal and plastic.

You might have to write a letter to one of the other manufacturers - such as Raven/Global Skyware - ask if their Ka dish designs above 90 cm are solid metal inside, or buy one and take it apart for a difinitive answer.

Hi I have asked them the head technical engineer at technical department told me the inside is a solid metal not mesh like on the KU version and its also made to a higher tolerance to,

A perforated dish is classed as solid, since it is constructed from a single piece of material and has the holes (not always round ones) punched out during manufacture.

Did you use the word 'mesh' in the call ?

Hi
I,v played around a little with KA signals with both 1.8 and 2.4 KU Channel Master dishes .. and although i got results from almost all the transponders that i tried at 16 East and 7 East ... the signal levels were quite a bit lower than i expected them to be on dishes of that size.
regards ....

Once I get the Elite Antennas Ka feed assembly returned I will strap it on to a couple of different size Precision spun aluminium dishes and test out the difference in signal levels for a couple of satellites. The Ka-Band D tests I did a few months ago were all carried out on a Precision 1.5m dish so I will repeat those tests and then perform the same tests on a Precision 2.0m dish.

If I use the same LNB and Elite Antennas Ka feed assembly on both the 1.5m and 2.0m Precision dishes in a reasonably short time frame it should be a fairly valid comparison of signal level vs dish size?

I am about 30 miles west of you i have a 2.4m channel master fixed dish,on 9 east ka band for the RTE channels. Also tried my 1.2m channel master motorized dish,on 9 east ka band signal around 85%-90% for the RTE channels.

The signal is alot higher on the RTE and wales spot beam data transponder on the 97cm technomate than both a 1.0 and 1.2 channel master dishes, I will buy a 120cm solid technomate dish and try it but want to get hold of one of these Prodelin/General Dynamics 3122 KA VSAT dish 3122-990 w/0800-4328 or a Global Skyware type 121 dish and test it I got hold of the suppliers details.

Hi
Details from the l.n.b here .... inverto.jpg

Channels in that band can be found on 7 East and 16 East and possibly a couple on 4.8 East - Check Flysat or Lyngsat listing sites for up to date info ...
Cheers.

No, Precision Antennas closed some years ago. Another UK based company named Elite Antennas emerged using some of the old Precision Antennas tooling but they went into voluntary liquidation just over a year ago.
