Seems like quite an extensive list WH.

You could add serial port, but the chances of that are slim anyway :)

Wired network, 100/1000MBit

USB2 rather than just USB1.1, but there probably aren't that many new machines going about that only support 1.1 anyway.

Memory expansion – how many free slots? Sometimes some of the included memory takes up the only expansion slot rather than being all onboard (particularly important to check on models boasting 'free' memory upgrades)

Thanks All

PM when you say : Wired network, 100/1000MBit

Do you mean there are different transfer speeds.

If so what would be the mininmum spec.

About a year ago onboard gigabit network emerged, set to replace 100mbit as the norm for new systems.

100mbit is still the standard, and unless you have a gigabit hub, which is unlikely, you won’t actually use a 1000mbit network card at above 100mbit unless you do a direct cable connection to another system with one.

However at some point they will become more widespread and hubs/routers that fully support them will emerge, but they will be backwards compatible with 100mbit ones anyway, just running at the slower speed. 100mbit is still fast, and even with a 1000mbit network enabled you probably wouldn’t notice the difference on normal network tasks.

It’s not that important, unless you have a network that supports 1000mbit or plan to in the near future, but it’s something to check when buying a new system.

THanks PM

I suppose I should also ask if anyone has bought a 'budget' laptop recently, and what their experiences/reccomendations are.

Any ideas most welcome

w hole, I have recently been checking up on Laptops in order to come up with a recommendation for my brother to use for University work. One of the useful places I found for info was http://www.whatlaptop.co.uk/, especially the forums. In the end we went for the Acer Aspire 2023WLMi.

I hope this helps,

Tirosh.

Firstly friends who had bought similar machines and were impressed by the value for money and secondly the reviews in the Whatlaptop forums. Lastly it seemed to provide everything that he wanted in his price range.
