We would like to ask a little curiosity . Why do some transponders are encrypted while being on the beam UK ? Example: what sense does it make RTE , TV3 TG 4 and much more on transponders with beam UK if they are encrypted? Thanks in advance! Bye

Simple - RTE cant afford the extra add on for the transmission rights for the whole of the UK (and the overspill into Europe)

RTE International or whatever its called these days is back on the cards now so may appear at some point with a "best of" for a more widespread audience

In a similar fashion to the UK PSB broadcasters, RTE need to ensure that the physical footprint is small, though with current Ku Band frequencies a beam only focusing on Ireland isn't practical without wasting a lot of coverage into the Atlantic, and that reception in much of Britain would still be possible with just slightly larger dishes.

That's where the similarities with their UK counterparts end though. Unlike the likes of the BBC & ITV who directly rent transponder capacity from SES, the costs of RTE, TV3 & TG4 are all met by Sky, hence you must have a Sky subscription either in the Irish Republic or Northern Ireland (no TV3 and some programmes on RTE & TG4 geoblocked) to view the channels, and why no FTV card scheme exists. Without Sky's involvement, I doubt these broadcasters would be on 28 East on their own accord, hence a service called Saorsat at 9 East where Ka Band footprints make reception in much of Britain difficult or impossible, but allowing viewers in Ireland, south & north, to use FTA receivers if they are outside of DTT coverage.

All the services at 28.2E are aimed at the UK, so some Sky channels are on a UK beam simply because that was the transponder they where allocated. It makes no difference in the UK which beam they are on.

There are suspicions that Sky rented a couple of the old Astra 2D frequencies and put encrypted services on them specifically to deny the BBC / ITV etc from getting hold of them and moving more of their channels free.

How true this is we will probably never know but its certainly a possible scenario.
