Grab these bargains from a field in the UK! :-)

These giant 60ft radar dishes once stood as a key defence against Nazi invasion of Britain.
RAF Stenigot, one of Britain’s last World War II radar posts, was part of the early warning system Chain Home radar network, primed to alert the country of a German onslaught.
But is has now been allowed to fall into disrepair in a farmer's field in rural Lincolnshire.

Now that's a shame.

But I must say that I didn't think that microwave radar was used in WWII so I suspect that they are cold war relics.

Still a shame though...

They are Cold War - and their fate will almost certainly be a appointment with a gas axe. :(

They're at Stenigot near the Belmont transmitter. You can climb up them and got some good pictures of myself sat on them.

You have the decimal in the wrong place, 18 metres.

for transport you must make this "cuts" (red-lines),
then I get 5m dish with 2 pieces (2,5m high)...

no , I will make this cuts myself ... : )
(I have truck with 2,5m high and 13m long , max load 24000kg)
But the focal point will be wrong then, won't it, if you convert it to 5m? Or am I missing something obvious?

I still think the right size is not more than 9-10meters..
still not belive about 18m..(maybe even 5-6m)
----
maybe 16ft (not 60ft) = 4,8m will be more realistic..
---
edit!
this picture again

shows "ladder" and between steps is about 0,4m , so 25 steps = 9-10m/one side ,18m total.

They're definitely 18m. I've climbed on them.

No change of focal point - it is still the same distance from the dish - you would merely be using a smaller portion of the same parabola.

Well, I was right and I was wrong.

Went to my local radio club this evening for about "Clandestine Operations during WWII". In the chat afterwards I learnt that the frequency used for Chain Home was around 27MHz (sorry, MC/s), chosen as the wavelength was about the width of a bomber's wings. I also learnt that the UK wasn't the only country that developed Radar, the Germans had radar some two years before us in 1935 but that they used VHF and even UHF frequencies.

They had approached the exercise differently as a highly directed beam like light, whereas we came from the lower frequencies where we had originally thought to develop a "death ray".

I also learned that a little while before war was declared a zeppelin came over to the UK and travelled up the eastern coast of the UK from the south. The zeppelin had loads of equipment that the Germans used to see whether we had any radar and, of course, bar a few pops and squeeks they heard nothing and concluded we had nothing. The Chain Home system was up and running and they follwed the zeppelin all along the way handing over from one station to another along the way.

Well, yes, but then the focal point would still potentially be a long way out. It would *look* a bit strange (functionally makes no odds) having a 5m dish with the feedhorn mounted 10m from the surface, for example. Seeing as I have no idea where the focal point is with these dishes I'll shut up now :)
