Its all to do with solar winds and the Earths magnetic fields. Watched a great programe about it on BBC HD a few weeks ago. Too difficult for me to explain so check this out. _http://www.gedds.alaska.edu/AuroraForecast/

It is best viewed in in the polar regions as you say but sometimes we get to see them in the UK. This picture was taken about 15 miles outside of Belfast, Northern Ireland

Aurora is magic :)

It´s a must to see it live as any pic or movie will not give You the magic feeling. Seen it a few times but to be sure You must get close to the polar circle. It´s there all the time, some days not that bright but still is there to view

Aurora intensity varies over an 11 year cycle. At the moment we are at a low point, but we are onthe start of the upswing back towards high activity levels. At the top of the last cycle I saw aurora several here in southern Scotland.

Mostly just a silvery shimmer in the sky but on one notable occasion we had a totally bolld red sky aprt from a perfectly circular "hole" in it above my head.

Beautiful and never to be forgotten. The early indications are that the next cycle might be unusually active so give it a couple of years and keep your eyes open after dark :)
