i forgot to put my coke bottle cap on my cband LNB last night after late night tweaking of "Vipersan" plate - and rain got in, not much, i just took it off turned it upside down and let it dry - seems fine, and no harm done, obviously i wouldnt want to keep repeating this, and understand the logic in keeping rain out.

i then wondered, whats the worst that can happen other than signal degredation when water gets in? Will it rust, not sure what the material is, tin of some sort... :)

basically how important is it REALLY to keep water out....?

Well water and electricity don't mix too well, if the water gets into the electronics it's toast, the LNB runs on DC voltage and current , it will corrode the lead/tin mixture of the solder over time that are used to mount the IC's, amplifiers and other stuff down to the PCB, and once the water gets inside the main eletronic enclosure it's very hard to get back out.

Even if you have your coke bottle cap on, water still can (and will) get in. And that will happen without rain, but purely as a result of condensation. So, do not forget to drill a small hole to prevent water inside C-band LNB.
