Hi there! I bagged a Ross DVB-S2 1201 HD Portable Satellite Kit from ALDI a few weeks ago for the knock down price of £19.99! Been playing with it pointed to 19.2e for some free HD. In my manual it states: "5.5 USB Module A USB Device can be connected to the USB Port located on the Side of the unit. Compatible devices are USB Memory Sticks* and most types of USB HDD* devices. (*MOST FAT32 and NTFS devices supported up-to 999GB)" So they recommend up to 1TB. I have tried flash thumb drive (memory stick) and this got corrupted quickly, so then I attached a self-powered 2.5" external drive and this locked after a while. I then attached a full size 320GB external drive with its own power supply and this has worked a treat. It's now full of Space Night and Bob Ross recordings. VLC player plays back the .MTS files a treat. This set is definitely an improvement from the Tevion kit sold a few years back, especially having a few more metal parts to the porty dish which started to split on the Tevion. It also doesn't seem to have the bad audio sync issue that the Tevion receiver had. Yes that update is just a channel database file and seems to have been released around the time of the Olympics. I haven't bothered with it yet but it can be downloaded to a USB stick and ingested by the receiver through the system menu.
