Just been over to my mums to sort out a bl--dy sky instaler . The pig was instaling sky to one of my mums neighbours so insted of putting up a dish he pulls my mums lnb out and replaces it with dual output lnb and feeds it into next doors flat , the first thing my mum knows about it is when the tv goes blank . So she looks out the window only to find this d--k with a cable in his hand , he then disapears next door without a word.
luckly I live close to hand so shot over there and had a few words with him like what the f---k is going on.
His excuse that the council was on his back about too many dishes going up and they were watching him:-Cgrin

Get onto Sky customer services and complain about the shoddy practises of their subby installers. He was probably running behind on his installs that day and took the quick route rather than the correct way of doing things to install the extra dish.

As the dish is on your mums property you are quite within your rights to disconnect the second cable! :D

Potentially dangerous I would have thought; there's no guarantee the 2 premises are on the same phase supply

The potential between tw phases is 400+ volts, the LNB feeds in these circumstances should be earth bonded, so that any dangerous voltages go to earth.

All multi user systems in apartment blocks have to be earth bonded for the above reason.

Having said that, many people share LNBs and aerial feeds without bonding and I have never heard of an accident caused by this, it is nonetheless potentially dangerous.

I would disconnect the other feed, he had no right to touch your Mum's dish, it does not belong to Sky.

I think a lawyer would enjoy sinking his/her teeth into something like this. Trespassing comes to mind alongside theft and who knows what else. Don't forget to get the neighbours on your side too. They are probably also assuming they have their own sky dish and lnb.

As for the admitedly ugly dishes sticking out all over the place, part of the problem is that the installers will always install in the easiest position. There may well be other less obvious positions for a dish.

Ive done this on installs , dont see the problem.. bearing in mind i only did it on extreme circumstances... ie no line of sight... but on this occasion the owners rents live 10 doors down... there was no Cable and had 60ft trees in his way.. it was lucky his rents had the end house as they had los... we down however have to drop the cable in the gutter and did my speciality on that.. i call it whipping.. 1 person holds the cable one side and i whip it into the gutter on the other..

That wasnt an ideal install but it had to be done..

The potential is 400v+ between phases when the phases are at 230v, is the lnb voltage is about 50V? Would be interesting to know what the voltage across the two lnbs was (assuming different phases), I'm sure it would still be considered potentially lethal as anything over 50V is.

All the best,
Ollie

It isn't to do with the LNB voltage, but if for some reason full mains voltage is passed up the coax cable due to an equipment fault.

Yes, One phase does hurt a bit:eek:, I 've touched the live wire many a time when I was a kid. ( I used to wire things up. LOL) Two phases however, is rather more dangerous, and it is important that you can't touch both of them at the same time.

Agreed. I've known this kind of practise to happen in apartment blocks not far from me.

As for the actual thread, my 2 cents worth is this : 1) On large appartment blocks it is obligatory that there is one central aerial for TV and not a bunch of them 2) Dishes sticking out all over the place are ugly. Combining the two points, I think it might actually be a good idea to combine as many TVs onto as few dishes as possible, BUT with the owners consent and with the necessary safety precautions. Also new builds could cater for one single point of distribution of all "common" forms of broadcast with pre-installed wiring.

Cables in gutters ? Gutters that usually have moss and permanent moisture ? I guess it's perfect if you're looking for a quick and dirty solution .. .. .. you could even get entry into the house without drilling by coming up through the drains .. .. ..
