I am using the Sky Demand using a UK VPN, but I would like to know if anyone outside the UK is using it simply by plugging the Sky box directly into their router.

-Does it work.?
-Does Sky cut you off for being overseas?

Please share your experiences. Thanks.

If your router has a UK VPN connect direct to your Sky box then no problem.

If you use a router with a none UK IP then it simply won't connect so Sky won't cut you off as you not connected.

Ive accidently had mine connect just fine on an Italian IP, no issues (But it was only connected a few seconds). Normally its through a WRT54GL router running DD-WRT and HMA

connecting with a non-uk ip address will not work. the menu shows connected under "network" and all OK, but when you try to download something, it shows an error. sky will not disconnect, though.

you can use a relatively new service called "smartdns", which is offered by more and more vpn providers. with this you just have to set up the dns servers on your router, your ip address will stay the same, your internet speed will stay the same, but there are certain websites and services with geo-blocking that can be accessed (us tv websites, uk tv websites, netflix...). a provider called overplay is the only one that supports sky on demand. so basically, no need for a uk ip vpn, just set up the dns servers, and away you go: all the on demand content is available for download. its 5 dollars a month.
what it does not do, however, is broadband callback, as it turned out. you need an actual uk ip address for that to work.
if you want to rent films on sky store, you dont need a phone line anymore with the newest software (R007), just a broadband internet connection. but for this to work it has to have a uk ip address.

Thats good to know. I spent a fortune on DECT repeaters to get the box online with a UK phone number (VoIP) and a UK IP via VPN

Is anyone having problems accessing Sky Demand via Overplay SmartDNS ? Mine appears to have stopped working and it couldn't be a worse time as I am losing my UK channels due to the 1N to 2E/F move..

more info here: http://www.satellites.co.uk/forums/...ng-broadband-callback-from-outside-uk.159249/

sky started blacklisting certain vpn's. i guess blocking smartdns is a part of this initiative.
overplay still worked last week, must have stopped working some time over the weekend.
as i mentioned in the other thread, broadband callback (sky store, interactive) already requires a dedicated (static) uk ip, not shared (like the ones most vpn companies provide).

I suppose it was inevitable as VPN and SmartDNS becomes more common, especially now that 2E is online and demand increases.

the good news is that while with satellite, you cant magically produce a signal that's not there, with online content, there always seems to be a way around things...
