Sky is very pleased to announce that the latest version of the Sky+ High Definition (HD) box will be released in September 2013. The main modification to the existing model is that the latest version will include a built-in Wi-Fi connector. This is completely new to Sky boxes so will be a welcome modification for Sky customers.
Although Sky customers can currently access a large variety of on-demand content and applications, the current set-top box requires connection to the internet via an Ethernet cable. The new box therefore will mean customers say “goodbye” to trails of ugly cables across their lounge floor and having to position their router close to the TV so that the ethernet cable reaches sufficiently.
The new box will be available as standard to all new customers from September 2013 onwards. New customers will take priority with Sky ensuring that all new customers can access on-demand services automatically. Once the box has been rolled out existing customers that do not yet have access to a HD box will be able to take advantage.
An adapter available for existing customers
Existing customers need not worry they are losing out on this excellent opportunity provided by Sky, as a Wi-Fi adapter will be available to purchase. This adapter is very similar to that provided to Xbox 360 users, allowing viewers connected to the internet to snip the cable for good.
Sky’s plans are to make this device available to all its customers and will therefore be available at a low cost in order to attract more customers getting connected to the internet via their Sky set-top box.
Customers can purchase this adapter now at a low price of £21.99 directly from the Sky website. However given the fact that Sky has just launched a now set-top box for only £10, it is highly expected that the cost of this device will decrease over time.
As previously mentioned in additional to this exciting launch there is now a TV set-top box available at a low price of just 1 penny shy of £10. Sky is opening its market to budget conscious consumers that are looking to upgrade their current Freeview to an internet connection set-top box.
The purpose of this low cost set-top box is to attract current Freeview customers who are thinking of upgrading to an internet ready device currently available by Sky’s rivals, Talk Talk and BT. Sky is highly aware that there is a large pool of consumers that they are currently not attracting, mainly because of budget reasons. They like what Sky offers but for a number of additional reasons including installation and monthly payments they are choosing not to sign up.
This “pay as you go” box means that customers can choose to pay a one off price of £9.99 to access many of Sky’s channels and/or access premium channels at an additional “day pass” or “monthly pass” rate.
The launch of these two boxes will ensure more of the UK population will see the benefits of Sky and the services it can provide meeting the majority of households needs.
