It turned out that the socket was really for satellite. All I needed was one of the converters. Thanks guys.

No it is the main and only sat socket in the flat. I've asked my landlord, however I have been told a communal satellite is in place.

I know this may sound basic - but I am new to this technology. I have the socket shown in the picture which connects to a communal satellite. I have both an F-cable as shown in the picture. As you probably will know, they don't seem to match. Do I need to buy one of these connectors...

Thanks for this, so basically you're saying that any Sky Plus box would work with a Satfree Sky card, connected to a communal system. Am I correct? I quite like this Amstrad DRX890 you are suggesting. All I need is the box, a cable, and the £25 card given there is already the communal satellite?
