Another nail in the 3D TV coffin

The BBC is to suspend 3D programming for an indefinite period due to a "lack of public appetite" for the technology.
Kim Shillinglaw, the BBC's head of 3D, said it has "not taken off" with audiences who find it "quite hassly".

The BBC began a two-year 3D trial in 2011, broadcasting several shows and events in 3D, including the Olympic Games and Strictly Come Dancing.

A Doctor Who anniversary special in November will be among the final shows televised in 3D as part of the trial.

I have a 3D ready TV but you have to buy the glasses separately and to be honest I know I'll only look at a couple of 3D test channels, think that was fun, and never use the glasses again, so I haven't bothered to waste money on a pair.

I cannot say i am surprised TBH, after my own slightly uncomfortable and disorientating first experience at the cinema watching Avatar a couple years ago, I certainly have not put a 3D TV on my wish list.

Thank Lord! How much money have TV makers spent developing this pointless technology?! I'll watch a movie in the cinema in 3D but there's no way I would want this technology in my home. TV prices are inflated because of this 3D as there's nothing else to sell!

In my opinion, spend more money on making HD channels look as good as they possibly can and ditch 3D completely. We all know that BBC HD picture quality is fairly crap in comparison with some European providers and even Sky.

Totally agree CJ. Especially with the introducton of Ultra High Def tv's. I struggle with 3D, having to wear special specs over the top of my normal ones is uncomfortable and impractical.

Why would anyone want to watch it when the quality is half that of a comparable HD channel?

Recent figures from the US suggest no more than 120,000 people are watching 3D channels at any one time.

Amazing really for a country of more than 300 million at the forefront of technology.

I for one never got interested in 3D tech ..
Severe astigmatism in one eye makes the wearing and watching through glasses uncomfortable ..and usually leaves me with a bloody awful headache...
Not only that but the storylines in movies often suffer dramatically in a tradeoff against the oooohs and ahhhs atributed to visuals ..
I don't want to see something attempting to leap out of the screen if I have to sit through 90 minutes of crap and unimpressive story and production...and end up leaving the cinema feeling like I've been raped in the wallet.
It's just not neccessary ..
budgets squandered for effects does not a quality movie make.

It's like all the previous attempts at 3D, it starts off with a load of hype, then all of a suden the fad dies off for about 20 to 30 years, and I'm sure I said sometime in the past that 3dTV was not going to last, because it's just a fad that people go through, get bored and it goes away...

I figured it was always going to be a hard sell, spend months and months trying to get the public to buy HD ready tvs and then along comes 3D. I said to my family this wasnt going to take off. I could be proved wrong.......

Anyway, back to reality (sic) since 3D for broadcast is more or less dead in the water, maybe gaming is the way forward ?

I've never lit all four burners on the gas cooker at any one time (well I did once, but only to check the piezo's).

I'm also unlikely to get to the limits of many of the motorcycles in my collection, though I did only pay about 450 for one like this, and she goes as well, if not better.

The French warning about the danger of letting six year olds loose with goggles.

A French health watchdog has recommended that children under the age of six should not be allowed access to 3D content.

The Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety (Anses) added that access for those up to the age of 13 should be "moderate".
