Another couple of pictures of the skipper butterflies at the back of us......and also an unknown insect which flies with its abdomen downwards and its tail curved upwards.....

Hi all I need some help to identify this shrub, think its in the sambucus ( elderberry ) family, height and spread are ~150 cm. Tolerates temperature swings from + 32c to -28c, 230 meters above sea level, central southern norway. If possible give the variant name also.

It looks very similar to sambucus racemosa grows in europe, asia minor and china. Height 8-10ft. Are the flowers yellow/white? They should be 1 to 3 inches wide panicles and flowers april and may, scarlet berries in june/ july. To propagate take 10-12 inch hard wood cuttings october/november . Birds love them.

Thanks bim perfect description of this shrub, do you know which variety ( sub species ) it is as the leaves are deeply cut?
Will try to take some cuttings a bit later in the year.

I don't think there are any sub species, it could well be a cross with guincho purple hence the slight purpling in the leaves. Looks very nice. Is there other shrubs similar growing in the area or is it just a stand alone? Do the flowers have a slight pink tinge to the outside? Could well have a one off.

They look absolutely marvelous. Not really a mushroom but a fungus coltricia perennis. Found in small groups sometimes where there has been a fire. Grows all year, no season for it and inedible. It's rather unusual having extra growths in the centre, normally they are only funnel shaped.

No other example of this shrub is recorded in this area as far as I know, but I live on a bird migratory route, think maybe a bird has eaten some fruit of this plant elsewhere and nature has taken it`s course.
As you stated birds love the berries.
What attracted me to the shrub was the bright red berries and unusual leaves, will inquire at the local natural history museum after the summer holidays end.

Thanks again now have something to work on.

Thanks, I said to my mum they looked more like a giant fungus than a mushroom but she said she thought they where the same thing. I was also intrigued by the extra growths.

Today's Identification Challenge: SWMBO has taken these pics of a bird that is "about the size of a Mallard", looks a bit Goosy, but we can't place using our own knowledge or reference books.

Can anyone help?
