The Rosetta spacecraft has detected water coming off comet 67P, the rubber duck-shaped lump of ice and dust that it placed the Philae robotic lander on last month.

The presence of water is not a surprise, but what has wrong-footed researchers is the makeup of the water, which is nothing like that seen on Earth.

Measurements from Rosetta’s Rosina instrument found that water on comet 67P /Churyumov-Gerasimenko contains about three times more deuterium – a heavy form of hydrogen – than water on Earth.

The discovery seems to overturn the theory that Earth got its water, and so its ability to harbour life, from water-bearing comets that slammed into the planet during its early history.

The strange shape of the comet has caused speculation that it may be the result of two separate bodies colliding at some time in the past. This has then prompted the thought that as the comet approaches the sun then a different mix of water might be detected coming from a different part of the body.

I was going to post similar but in a slightly different vein. The scientists haven't confirmed that all comets are heavy water providers, just this one.

Comet 67p is a once only comet from its trajectory. The vast majority that have come close to the inner planets are repeat offenders, having been pulled in, then 'captured' by the larger gaseous Jupiter. In flying close to the sun, there is every chance that the deuterium is broken down into more common water molecules.

Start going back in time, and any number of cosmic events could have brought in untold numbers of objects from the Trans-Neptunian area to impact on Mars, Venus and this planet.

The outer Oort cloud may have trillions of objects larger than 1 km (0.62 mi),[3] and billions with absolute magnitudes [14] brighter than 11 (corresponding to approximately 20-kilometre (12 mi) diameter), with neighboring objects tens of millions of kilometres apart.
