Well ..it seems my extension wings have been damaged (ie 2 sections) on Christina ..
Not unexpected I guess ...but now I have a decision to make.
Next year make 2 replacement sections ..or ..another idea that occurred..
Christina is now 2.2m plus currently ..and so in theory I could push this to 2.4m using the Hessle brand origami dish sections ...overlayed onto Christinas ally sections...
Not unlike the upgrade done to the Lovell telescope in the past ..
A new surface sauspended above the old one..
A lot of work but would it be viable ?
remember ..I dont need Ku accuracy as she is used only for C band..
..and certainly the segments are cheep enough at approx £200 delivered...and like Chistina is a 6 segmented construction.
I guess my concerns are thusly.
The FD ratio ..
Hessle brand dishes are an unknown to me ...
Christina is a deep dish with an FD around .45 ..so in order to use the existing tripod the Hessle would have to be similar.
As to the reported fold up nature of these cheepo dishes ...
I would think the problem relates more to the lack of substance frame and structure wise..
Attaching just the segments to Christinas solid structure _might_ overcome this issue..
Can members who have actually had experience of these origami dishes please advise as to ..
how sturdy are the panel segments ...what kind of accuracy could be expected in C band...materials made from and FD ratio of this 2.4m cheepo dish ?
As I said ..just thinking out loud atm...

This looks extremely like a Jonsa... to me.

What happened to the two panels that go damaged?

Wind stresses and rain ingress between the fibre glass layers caused the gelcoat to lift on one panel ..and the other to crack ...
I still have the mold and theoretically could make replacements ..but was considering the other option to gain a bit more dish area and uniformity...

That is what I would do, without Christina's flaps (oooer) just to keep the weight down

..and certainly the segments are cheep enough at approx £200 delivered...

For that sort of price I would wait for a solid 2.4m reflector to turn up on eBay (not forgetting there were also 2.7m and 3m solid reflectors around in the good ole days).
