If you have a door and its not locked, in the UK, you have the problem with something called squatters running the risk of gaining full access to your property, and having full rights to abuse your castle.
Problem is, if you keep your home open for any people/animals that really are in need of shelter, how does one deal with the problem of returning to a new lock on the door with a rather complicated brass mechanism to get in ?
