Well, I finally got a response, from Currys though, and it seems they think the general public, including those who know more than the average sky monkey, truly are complete idiots!!!:

Having contacted our Burnley store, I have been informed that this information
is correct. They have advised me that installation is required as you will not be
able to receive a signal. This is why we are offering this service to our customers.
I have noted your comments with regards to this matter and this will be forwarded
