I have been re-configuring my setup today (I have a Sony HDD recorder too).
The scart that should go to the TV allows inputs too, as well as the other scart. I have no HDMI on the recorder, so I'm using RGB component, which means that I can use both scarts for input.
I had to make some cables up as I need 5m long x5, since I have loads of sat cable around, I used that.
