Pace MSS300 fault

Hi guys,
I have a Pace MSS300 that whistles when I turn it on. The box does work, but there's a banding effect on the picture. The whistle eventually disappears when the box warms up, and the banding goes too.

I opened it up and found that the whistle is coming from the transformer - do I need a new transformer, or is there another cause??

I'd like to get this box working properly again, as the replacement I bought in 2007 (a brand new analogue receiver from Conrad Electronics) has awful sound quality...

I hope German analogue continues beyond 2010, as the picture is so superior to all UK channels!

Welcome to satellites,

I used to repair these and most likely electrolytic capacitors in the power supply unit are the fault.

I suggest that if your local school or college does electronics as part of its courses (even if you do not) they may find the unit a challenge and a good teaching aid for the electronics class especially on the safety aspects of discharging large capacitors. You would end up getting a repaired item at minimal cost I would have thought and everyone is a winner

Do you know which capacitor(s) it's most likely to be? Or should I just replace all of them?

To answer Topper's idea, I totally wouldn't trust my electronics teacher with anything!
I do know how to solder - I just need to find out which component...

thanks,
jamie.

Ah what faith we put in the teachers employed in our educations system to toil and struggle to educate the next generation. It is a shame that you should have no faith in him but if that is the case, doesn't say a lot for the education system then

Thanks for that
I'll replace them at the weekend.

I noticed that page also includes an "LNB power off in standby" mod - has anyone tried this?
At the moment, my receiver sends power to the LNB all the time and, while in standby, it tunes itself to the old Sky1 analogue frequency (but the tuner output only appears on the VCR SCART socket). It'd be nice to disable the tuner in standby as well as the LNB power.
