How did they?

Just a retro analogue satellite question. When you upgraded your subscription say add movies to your package. How did they upgrade your package, did they beam a signal down to your dish?. And could they tell what channels your were viewing?

There was no return path on the analogue boxes, subs changes were handled by ota upgrade on the cards. If you downgraded and your card missed the kill command, it stayed active until it had a kill command successfully uploaded onto it. I know of one card which was kept out of the box and only inserted occasionally to watch something specific which stayed active for months at the end..
