My System: Nokia IRD 1800
Nokia SAT 1800 IRD

Hello, I've just picked up a Nokia 1800 but am having trouble figuring out how to scan/tune for channels.

I have connected it up to my old dish (circa 1988) which I originally used with an Amstrad SRD400. Last week I connected an Amstrad SRD700 which picked up a few channels inc Eurosport before dying.. it'd been sat in my garage and was a bit damp I think, it was ok for a couple of hours then when changing channels went pop and the picture turned to 'snow'.

Anyone out there with any knowledge of these receivers? all help/advice most welcome.
Cheers, Mick.

My System: Mostly gathering dust cos I'm a lazy git. Porty dish face blew off the mount, not too pleased...

The Sleepy Hollow pollracle has spoken!

I think your dish may need a new LNB if it's c.1988, assuming you can remove the screws on the clamp...

Is it one of the old Amstrad-Fidelity dishes with the big white blue-cap LNB by any chance?

As for the receiver, the tuning isn't standard on these boxes and it uses it's own "system" for tuning the channels in, unfortunately I haven't a clue how to tune it as I tried my own, but without the original remote it's difficult, so the casing's become a Mini-ITX project...

Thanks for the reply, yes the LNB is old but it's black with a blue cap..if that means anything to you!
It worked fine only last week with the Amstrad box( before the receiver died) are you saying there may be a compatibility issue? I know little about Sat systems and assumed an analogue LNB was ..an analogue LNB!
If it is a mismatch then any idea's on what LNB I should look for?
I'm only really interested in receiving free Eurosport, mainly for motorcycle stuff..Dakar, MotoGP etc. Is there another option other than the old analogue system?
Thanks again for the reply. Mick.

Ah, the black Bluecap, same as the white, just usually used on the mesh Amstrad dishes!!!

Just a little tecchy info, the Bluecap is an old Single band 10GHz LNB, since they were used there have been the Enhanced 9.75GHz LNB and the Universal LNB (essentially the "Current issue" type). The term "Analogue LNB" is very innacurate, as you can use an old single band LNB with some digital channels and a Universal for most analogue channels!!!

The compatibility issue is that the receiver is better suited to using a Universal LNB (plus you can get a few more channels that the Bluecap LNB can't), and also as Analogue transmissions are becoming few & far between, you'll probably want to get a Digital receiver soon, which need a Universal LNB for best performance and less hassle...

As for replacing your LNB, you may struggle as if it's the old Amstrad dish, the nuts on the clamp will probably be rusted to hell and would need cutting off with a hacksaw (Be careful though!!!) & replacing, but if you're up to it, then a Universal LNB is what you need. Or you could just buy a completely new dish as my old Amstrad fell apart upon removal, it's up to you though...

Also, replacing the cable is highly reccomended, my mum's house has a mesh Amstrad dish (fitted with an Enhanced LNB I think) and the cable's giving up (crumbling outer plastic, very bad as there's usually up to 18v going through the cable and short that out with rain and you have a dead or damaged tuner!!!), for this try getting CT/WF100 cable, with a suitable colour to match your house, and you'll be sorted...

Hope you're still awake after all that and I hope it's helpful!!!

Zzzzz!

Zzzz....!
Seriously thanks again.. where would the world be without anoraks! The removal of the LNB shouldn't be too bad.. it's only been up there since 1994! ( I am however familiar with trying to fix Japanese motorcycles, who as everybody knows are put together by the extrodinary long and dexterous fingers of Japanese housewives..!)
I'll have a trawl through my local Maplins and see what I walk out of the door with..they seem to have an increasing amount of Sat 'stuff'.
I've also tried a couple of routes to getting a manual to check if there is a search facility tuning wise on that receiver, and I'll check the exact frequency Eurosport is on and try to fine tune the nearest channel into it.
I chose to stay analogue purely to get Eurosport free.. is there a free digital option?
Thanks again, Mick.

The Sleepy Hollow pollracle has spoken!

The frequency for Analogue Eurosport is 11259V, and for Digital Eurosport 12226H (there's also Eurosprt 2 but that's encrypted)...

(all the frequencies (Digital and Analogue) are listed here: _http://www.lyngsat.com/astra19.html )

As for the tuning on the 1800IRD, I think it uses 4 digit tuning (might be confusing it with my Matsui though), hence why I never used mine and stuck to my Pace MSS300, but I really haven't a clue as I had no remote for mine so tuning was practically impossible...

There's some info here on the SAT1700 & 1800 IRD (not much though!!!) boxes:

_http://www.your-book.co.uk/sat1700.htm

Also, have a read of the following site run by the member Analoguesat, there's a tonne of info on his site...

http://www.analoguesat.co.uk/

As for Maplin, I'm sure there's cheaper places!!!

If you can wait, Lidl may be selling some of their Digital FTA receivers and dishes sometime soon (about March or April), their stuff's pretty cheap and very useful, I have 2 of their receivers and dishes myself and I love them to bits!!!

I give up...!

seems I'm too stupid to search/find anything with my analogue thing.. thanks for the help anyhow..I don't know if it's simply a case of mismatched receiver/LNB or what, but I don't have a clue so may well have to seek an alternative system to pick up Eurosport for free..

Well, just have a look on Ebay for a Pase MSS series receiver, a Universal LNB, and CT100 cable, F-Connectors (if yours aren't in good condition) and lastly Self amalgumating tape for waterproofing the LNB connections, and that'd be perfect for you, and if you get a Twin-output LNB, you can have both a Digital and Analogue receiver...

My System: 90cm Dish. Dual Lemon LNB for 13E/19E. Twin Output Lemon LNB for 28.8E. Samsung 9500 with 'alternative' firmware. Couple of DigiBoxes. Amateur Radio station. Going Bald with a patient wife!

The LNB removal should be pretty easy if its been up a long time - 2 sockets and bars and just cra*ck the pins and bolts off and replace with new ones.

Plenty of low-noise LNBs on Ebay to choose from.
