school equipment

Hi,

I work in a school and have just come across our old satellite setup it consists of large dish looks like abput 2m diameter with actuator arm probably seized as this hasnt been used for about 8 years also got a lnb with a polariser on it. equipment is uniden ust 8010 receiver uniden ust 881 positioner uniden ust 92 d2 mac decoder. i think the receiver has been looked at before judging by a couple of screws missing in side front cover so think this mis faulty as it does not even switch on but the other two pieces of equipment and dish look in good order. is there any way of moving the motor by sticking 36v across the motor /actuator to try and move the dish also can i use this lnb for connecting to a fta comag sl65 or will i have to change th lnb assuming the dish to be pointing the right direction

Thanks Alun

My System: Sky+, DB 7000s, Gemini 4.3 in flash, Var on USB stick. Transparent 80cm Dish, Moteck SG2100 DiseqC motor, lots of legacy gear. Meters: Satlook Digital NIT, Unaohm EP313, Swires Annie 204 Spectrum, Rover ST-4 Spectrum.

Take a couple of pictures and upload them, the members will be able to tell you what you need then.

You will need to change the LNB, but we need to see the flange type, if it is a standard 36v setup, then a V-Box should be able to move the dish, you never knw, if it was well greased, it may still move.

My System: 1.2M & 55cm Gregorian Dish`s, 1.5m Gibertini on a Jaeger 1224 H-H motor. Dreambox 7025 200gb HD, Vbox-II. SS2 Card.

now thats cool! But after all those years the lnb is probably old. Does it have a noise figure on it? Measured in db`s.

CNN doesnt really narrow it down as its on a few sats. Any other channels on there?

You can move the actuator with a car bat, but it will move slower.

Would be interested to see some pics up of it.

My System: Sky UK. FTA analogue & digital satellite from 5 fixed dishes (5E/7E/9E/13E/16E /19E/23E/28E) Pace MSS100, Echostar IP3000VA, Technomate TM-1000D, Dreambox 7020S

CNN doesnt transmit on 10779 anywhere in Europe!

The Silvercrest will be looking at a LNB LO freq of 9750, the lnb could be one of several frequencies - if you can give us more channels then we can probably identify it.

Yes, it will be Astra 1G (19.2E) - 11778.00 V - Txp:68 - Beam:Astra 1G DVB-S (QPSK) - 27500 3/4 - NID:1 - TID:1068

The LNB will be an old DBS type with Local Oscilator of 10,750 Mhz

Ah....

Maybe one of the teachers brought their old sky analogue card or box in for the staff room during lunch and break times....

old sat

Thanks for all the replies on this subject. the last technician left about 8 years ago and he was involved in setting up the dish and equipment so i am led to believe. sorry for the long reply as i have no internet access at home at the moment. I will take some pics of this seup later, but the dish is quite high up and not to keen to mess about with it to much as its working at the moment. Pity the original uniden receiver has packed up as i would have liked to played about with it. May get a cheap second hand analogue receiver for home use. and school would be handy for setting up my dish at home. Any thoughts on analogue receivers and prices what would be best to get ? When my silvercrest scanned it did say astra on some of the channels. so may be the dish is pointing 19.2e

Thanks 4 now Alun

Above are two Echostar Digital/analogue receivers with 36v positioner, ideal for your purposes.

Or the Pace MSS 508i analogue only with inetgrated positioner 250089105471

Analogue sat,

my sl65 is not picking up anything else only cnn

video pid is 0165
audio pid is 0100
pcr pid is 0165

if this is any help.

when i do a scan i get loads of channels coming up with the name carrier 1,2 3 4 etc and a couple that say astra so maybe it is astra 19.2. signal is banging the doors out on 99% so no prob with signal. do you think the lnb on the dish is only covering a certain frequency and that is why i only got one channel ?

picture submitted shows cnn but satellite shows a bird 5w. i have scanned astra and other satellites but no joy yet.

Thanks 4 now

Alun

You are on 19E ok, but your lnb is a 10750MHz type and the receiver is looking for 9750MHz for low band or 10600MHz high band so all the frequencies are miles out.

Try playing with the lnb settings within the receiver menu and see if it will let you set 10750 MHz

Remember you'll still only receive the vertical channels, as you have no means of switching the LNB's polarity unless you use a receiver with polariser control (presuming you still have access to the polariser's cabling).

Yes correct, however, if the OP buys the Echostar I suggest above, that should do it all, as it has polarizer control.

Having said that, with a 10.75 Ghz Local Oscilator, he will miss all of the low band channels, so the LNB really needs replacing.

lnb specs

thanks all for your info will try settings on receiver l8r i assume the polarising lnb has some sort of stepper motor on it to enable it to turn through 180 degrees as i think a polar mount is not the same as stab motor mount i.e. the dish turns and no skew adjustment with modern setup. modern lnbs only v and h polarity. is there any way of putting a voltage up the polariser connection to turn the lnb. i have six additional wires coming in from the dish would these be 4 for the positioner 2 for the lnb (plus the coax which i can identify.) is there anyway of identifying these cables with a meter without going up to the dish ?

The polarotor servo motor needs to be pulse driven (+/-5V pulses). Only receivers with this facility can be used. By 'two for the LNB' I assume you mean twin and screen (+5V, pulse and ground).

cables

total flexes are 4 one being the coax inner and outer braid, two flexes which i think are the motor / positioner (four cables total) ,and one flex going to the lnb polariser with two calbes inside.
