BBC World has said that its coverage of the aftermath of the terrorist attack on New York and Washington has been watched by an estimated 300 million viewers around the world. CNN uses new technology for news coverage
CNN has been using videophone technology to get correspondents into the heart of the action in the Middle East, following the terror attacks on New York and Washington. Reporter Nic Robertson used the technology to broadcast the Taliban press conference in which Afghan leaders rejected the notion that Osama bin Laden was behind the attack. It was also used to broadcast live pictures of explosions on the outskirts of the Afghan capital, Kabul, which were at first mistakenly thought to be American missile attacks. The portable phone links to a camera and a folding satellite dish around 40cm in diameter and can be set up in seconds. [Sep 15]

Broadcasters to increase ad breaks
TV channels in the UK have been given the go-ahead to increase the amount of advertising airtime they show over the next few weeks to compensate for the hours of breaks they lost during coverage of the US terrorism attacks. All the UK's major broadcasters abandoned advertising during their extended coverage. Sky News stopped its ad breaks as soon as news of the first plane crash came in. Since it broadcasts an average of nine minutes of ads an hour, it has been losing advertising minutage of 216 minutes per day. [Sep 15]
