Well

Put simply R is writeable and RW is re-writable the rest can be gleaned from the many articles available on-line by googling
So rather than re-invent the wheel perhaps if you just read one of them for example this one

the main thing is, all are ok

they will all burn, and they will all play back.

Most modern DVD writers support all of them.

if like me, you own a Pioneer DVDRW-112D then its burns all of them plus the dual/double layer discs too (8.5gig)

My System: 1200cc with 100,000,000,000 neurons and 100,000,000,000,000 connections

Just to add to the guide posted,

DVD-R uses constant linear velocity (CLV) - where as DVD+R uses constant angular velocity (CAV). It may sound overly technical to be important but many older DVD players can only deal with CLV and therefore play DVD-Rs better than +Rs, so if you plan to play the DVD on an older stand alone player DVD-R/RW might be a better choice.
