Rupert Murdoch’s BSkyB is said to be bidding for the rights to show highlight clips of premier league football over mobile phones. The bid is part of a wider effort to control all the media rights to English football. "Sky is bidding for the whole thing ... including the mobile rights," one source told Reuters. Another source also said Sky was trying to get hold of the mobile phone rights which are currently held by start-up third-generation mobile phone operator ‘3’ UK - controlled by Hong Kong-based Hutchison Whampoa. Hutchison, which paid a reported E49 million for its three-year deal back in June 2001, has also submitted a bid, along with world-leading mobile phone group Vodafone.......... If Sky took the mobile rights for 2004, it would probably strike separate deals with different wireless operators. But if the league awarded BSkyB all of the rights to premier league coverage for the next year, it would risk a backlash from European competition regulators. | ||
