My System: Sky-HD
Question Why do I have to use such a stupid Sky-HD-receiver??

Hi @all,

'cause I like watching undubbed english and american movies I prefer SkyHD to Premiere (Germany) but my question:

Why do I have to use this stupid Thomson-SkyHD-receiver. There is a USB-socket with no use, a ethernet-socket with no use, a S-ATA socket with no use either. The fan doesn't stop while sleeping and the design is just aweful.

With premiere you can use many very excellent receivers based on linux, you can change and make better the software, stream the movies, copy the movies.

With the Thomson box I can't use diseqc, not even watch other channel on ASTRA 19° with a non-diseqc-sat-switcher.

The most annoying thing is the software. I can't use the menu and watch tv at the same time, I have to listen to some strange music instead!

What can we do?? Is there a forum or a thread to improve the box, to modify the software and to use the many sockets?? Is there anybody outside who dislikes the Thomson box like me and wants to do or have done any improvements??

Best regards,

fiveyears

My System: Technomate TM6800D & TM1000D+ receivers, Stab H-H90 motorised Triax 1m dish 42E to 30W. Fixed Orbital 1m on 26E, 2 x minidishes.DigitAlB movies. A Bigsat BS-S77CX and a Sky Dodgibox.

Hi fiveyears, welcome to satellites.

The extra functions that you mention such as USB, Diseqc etc are no doubt disabled by the Sky software and not really the fault of the Thomson box. All Sky boxes are equally nobbled unfortunately, as they don't want them used for other providers, unless they are forced to, by government.

I would presume however that it would be far easier to use one of the new HD Dreamboxes that have just been released than trying to modify the existing Sky code, as it would probably never work on Sky again if you did.

Do you think I could use a DreamBox HD (I love dreamboxes ) with my Sky viewing card and the card wouldn't be killed?

Well, they are quite new on the scene, but all the other Dreamboxes work OK with Sky cards, and keep them up to date too without problems. If you do a forum search you will find plenty of references to it.

It will take someone to try one of the new HD Dreamboxes with Sky to know if it will work, I have not seen any reports of it as yet, but since it is Linux one would expect it to.

You might want to keep the Thomson box, as there are rumours that at some point Sky may update the encryption algorithms coupled with a card change, this could render all boxes apart from Official Sky ones useless for receiving Sky.

Looking at the Premiere package details:
Premiere Germany Package on Astra 19.2E
and the Lyngsat channels for this package
_http://www.lyngsat.com/packages/premiere.html
Under APID column

It shows that there are a lot of channels with the original audio sound, in addition to the dubbed German sound.

My System: Sky UK family pack. FTA analogue & digital satellite from 5 fixed dishes (4.6E/5E/13E/16E/19E/23E/28E) Pace MSS100, Echostar IP3000VA (with dragon cam), Coship CDVB 2300A, Fortecstar Lifetime Ultra, Technomate TM-1000D, Dreambox 7020S, 2250kb

The last noble sat warrior to fly the olden flag of Analogue

The usb / ethernet sockets on sky digiboxes are software disabled. No doubt Sky has long term plans for them - storing films on an external hard drive is an obvious suggestion for the usb port.

fiveyears, currently a DM800 will work with a SkyUK card, but you must use NewCS, it will not work with CCcam.
