Now I'm really pleased - AFN 1 West

..Rushed home from work to try a bit more DXing with my T-dielectric in place..
I just pulled in all channel idents for AFN
4175 R
1 West

Sadly only the Pentagon Channel is open now but still..
Quite an achievement for my cheapo Pauxis on a 1.8 PF dish

here is a snapshot ..
a bit blocky but more or less all there..

good result - Vipersan -

not a hint of that one for me --

strangely the ERTU channels are a little stronger tonight --
no break- up at all ----
despite the weather being poor here -- thick cloud and drizzle

Sadly thck cloud and rain has put paid to any further fringe reception tonight ..but you are right..
ERTU certainly appeared stronger this evening.

the weather has cleared a little here so managed to pull an entire baseball game on AFN sports MPG4
also caught a snap of the HD test PBS service ..but wrong aspect on the monitor I was using..
Pictures were taken with a camera off screen ..
..as I had to switch over to my Humax HDCI2000 to resolve the MP4 and HD test..

Hi Edgar ...sadly no audio on PBSHD .
I assumed it was down to my equipment rather than low signal .
..but now you have asked I'm assuming neither did you.
Also ..screen has now gone black on Mpeg4_SD ..
My receiver doesn't report it encrypted ...just nothing on screen.

I'm just sorry I didn't make my modifications over the weekend when more channels were open.
c'est la vie.

Enjoy the rest of your Holiday m8

btw ..did you read my previous post on the T shaped dielectric plate I fitted to my lnbf ?

..and can you offer any better explanation as to why it made such a dramatic difference ?

i have no signal with a 1,86m dish,on this transponder,i could imagine, that this posistion, the roof of the nabours house, take me a little bit signal away, the other working well, how strong is your signal level on afn?
why the channels are diffrent from hotbird?
does a afn decoder,also open 1 west,in cband,or is this a diffrent one?

Hi Turok ..
Pictures are badly breaking up at the moment but signal is still there ..
Im still experimenting with different sizes / shapes and materials for my dielectric plate/feed.

I can tell you that without the T feed ..ie ..just a slice of the same material completely inside the lnbf throat I get nothing at all on AFN..
..below is a composite picture showing the pixelation ..but more importantly the signal levels Im getting using Progdvb ..

hi - Vipersan -

it think you are doing very well to get that transponder with your setup -- well done you are getting the best out of it

i had a play around myself last night and copied your idea of using a plastic t piece -on my setup - in fact i used 2 together on top of the dielectric plate -- see picture --
it improved the signal on the ERTU channels from
40% sig strength
55% quality
to --
55% sig strength
80% quality -- on my vantage reciever

but there still is not a hint of signal from the AFN transponder- l.o.l .

thanks for sharing the T piece info

regards nelson.b

Hi Nelson ..
I'm happy to know you at least got an increase in signal and quality..
It may well be that this configuration is more suitable to prime focus feeds ..where the scalar rings are flush with each other ..
..I also think it might be more effective if the T was continuous in the same material ..
I've tried mixing 2 materials inside and outside the throat ...but was less
effective..
..you could also try cutting a stepped extension to the outer part of the T to fit neatly into the tapered rings ..
..making the last one flush with the outer ring ..
Assuming you can find enough material
Oddly ..I have now got a piece of Teflon/PTFE ...but this has so far proved less effective than the polyethylene cutting board (which incidentaly has a rough surface to pevent slippage when cutting)
..Another thing I need to consider..

Lets keep trying buddy ...you never know what we might yet pull in ..

VS

just a quick question for you m8 ..
Do you get _anything_ from 43 West at your location ?

I tried last night but nothing on C band ..though I can pull transponders in KU.
Its deffinately fringe for anyone in the UK ..but I can't decide if I might have a tree in the line of fire ..

hi - Vipersan -

i,v not much spare time outside work at the moment --
but i intend to try a few different shapes - etc for the dielectric plate -- when i can

lots of scope for experimenting it seems -- l.o.l

43 west -- no C band - k/u is fine

40 west c band comes in strong

55 west -- brings up 3 or 4 transponders ( non circular - no plate in )
quite weak signals - variable

cheers nelson. b.

hi yes,the same on 43w with no plate!
currencly heavey rainshowers are coming in the night, after a real hot day,but usaly, the cband, signal strenth is not so much affected, because of the low freqency!
what is intresting, that only the afn transponder is so weak,on west, since, the satellite has been replaced, the results are better now, before i get only deutsche welle tv,now also the egypt satellite channel, esc, and the rest expect afn are here now
it looks for me,at the moment, maybe afn use a special beam!
the same phanomenen, like metro tv ghana on 37 west Telstar 1 ex orion satellite!
good night,until tomorow!

Hi Antenna1 ..
Yes I receive around 80-90% of European transponders on 40.5W depending on weather conditions.

Sadly nothing at all from 43 west ..
and I have no line of sight for any C band birds East of 1 deg West ..
I'll make you a list of the C band sats I can receive when I have a chance.

I'm located close to Manchester ..

Thanks for the list so you are receiveing these on your 1.8m pf dish.

Which satellite would you say is the strongest and what is the strongest transponder on 40.5w i brought a c-band lnb and going to give it a try on my small 1.2m dish.

Can you also receive any thing from 55w 58w

i think it should be the same
because of low freqency.and around 900 km ,distance, ist nowting for the cband

i dont heare many cband reports, how strong is each freqency in each country!
when the distance are more, then there is a diffrence, but i think rcn is the best you can try!
you get my mail in the meantime?

Managed to pull in KNR (3714 L) today ..after some dish tweaking and some time spent locating this bird.

Still no sign of anything from Intelsat 11 on 43 deg West...
Can anyone tell me what the strongest signal transponder is for the UK ?

I'm thinking I might have to wait till the leaves fall from a tree which may partly obscure this point in the arc.
..Odd though ..as I can get KU from this location.

I'll keep trying..

Hello Vipersan,

I am sure you know, that @43,1°W is an linear working orbiter as 37,5°W and not with cirkular signals as 1°W, 5°W or 40,5°W.

But in deed, 43,1°W is not so easy to catch. But I can´t say, which signal is strongest in UK.

Good luck!
Edgar.

Thanks for the reply Edgar..
Do you know if there is an 'optimum' time of day for reception of this bird ..
I do find that some sats appear to peak around certain times
