Have a look at these sites, haven't used any for a while, but I'm sure they are fairly representative.

I would like to start getting into programming my own cards.

I hear that the elvis programmer is a good device to purchase.

Please can someone give me an idea as to how I go about programming the card using this programmer.

RE: a recommended programmer?

If your looking for info on the Elvis programmer you can read the manual and downlaod the latest software from:
http://www.adteknik.se/english/manual.html
Using your programmer and a card, ie. gold card, and a hex file ,which you download from the net, you should be able to program the card with the hex file and decode the OnDigital Channels.
You can find lots of interesting links here:

http://satcodesclub.da.ru/

u can also purchase the programmer from www.divineo.co.uk
