Is it better to buy basic ?

I am about to build a micro atx system, well when I get the bits as pressies for Christmas. Is it better to buy a basic micro atx motherboard for the AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ (2.8GHz) Socket AM2 2MB L2 Cache (2x1MB) and put in a decent graphics card or buy a top notch motherboard and a decent graphics card or loads of tweaking bits. I don't need an 8 channel sound system but like good graphics. Not sure if you can have a basic motherboard and get great graphics ?

It's not what you know or who you know but what they know.

Well

I am surprised that nobody has voiced their opinion about this in the last four hours, perhaps they are all off Kirbying oops vacuuming ATM

Personally I would just buy the best your pocket will allow but based around the use you require of the finished article. It is no good taking the latter option if you require high end graphics for gaming

I don't sell 'em, I just build 'em...

Anyway, in order to get a decent system with good graphincs, it's best to buy at least mid-way parts, low-end parts are pretty poor performers on most cases and high-end of course costs more than you can really justify...

in my opinion i would buy a half decent motherboard, if thats crap then there is no point plugging a £300 Graphics card in a peice of crap..

the other point is, crap stuff usually breaks LOL
and if the motherboard has to come out.... so does everything else

this all depends on what your using the machine for... a gaming system needs high end specs, for downloading films and burning to disc an old cheapo will do

Thanks for the replies. I will now hand out my list with links to websites for the bits I want. Then come miserable January, cold, wet and depressing I will play away assembling my computer. In the meantime I had better sort out the sat setup, I can't get 5.0W Atlantic Bird 3 at all but can get 4.0W Amos 1,2. Needs another tweak me thinks.
