Vista Service Pack 1 - Windows Update missing file

A customer of mine bought a new laptop two months ago, complete with the bundled Windows Vista/Norton package.

The Windows update that appeared last week was for the Vista service pack 1, requiring about 60Mb download, which appears to have been loaded onto the machine in the background of other work online.

When installing the upgrade however the laptop continuously checks back to Microsoft for one additional file of '0k and download time of 0s', and (of course) never finds it.
The laptop therefore keep failing to upgrade and has actually prevented other applications for running, in one instance yesterday it crashed completely and went into the Windows scan disk recovery mode, but found nothing physically wrong with the drive.

The update that is already on the laptop cannot be removed, unless somebody knows better, and the pending install is hindering acces to the internet, as it prevents the current Internet Explorer from working, even though programmes can access the internet directly.

Any pointers?

Thanks , at least it is possible to remove it (though the process does look rather daunting without a printout)

Not if you just do the second option the System Restore.
Go to Start, and in Start Search type System Restore, then just select the time before Vista Service Pack 1 installed.

My System: Dream7020 and AZ Elite

Then the SP will load again and keep searching for a zero upgrade

Could it be a Dell lappie ? If so, better go to Dell for an upgrade
