Thumbs up Microsoft update 13th oct

Quote:Microsoft will issue its biggest ever security update on 13 October.

The update will include 13 bulletins that between them tackle 34 vulnerabilities.

Microsoft said that eight of the bulletins were rated as critical - the most serious sort of vulnerability.

To prevent any of these updates causing problems with your system and software programs, may I suggest that you turn off Automatic Updates and wait until Wednesday and, using Internet Explorer, go to MS Updates and click Custom.
Then install just two of the updates (make a note of the KB numbers) and reboot and see how your computer runs.
If OK then repeat and get another two.

Any problem, go straight to Add/Remove section and remove the last two that you downloaded.
Then proceed with two more until they have all downloaded and installed.

It is a labourious job but better to know that if any of them causes problems, which ones it was.

Safe Updating.

13 bulletins on the 13th may be an omen,
Remember to reset your update settings when you are happy with this lot.

Yes

Good advice, for those who do not know how to turn off automatic updates, this can normally be found in control panel..... system....... automatic updates tab. In XP and you will get a balloon telling you your system is not protected and a red shield on the bottom toolbar.

I do not have a Vista set up at home anymore but I just checked with my daughter at Uni and her lappy is Vista, I got her to do a help search for autoupdates and it appears you can only choose prompt before download and not switch it off completely, anyone confirm that

My System: Triax 1.1m and Orbital 80cm Motorised Dishes. Various fixed Dishes. Eclectic selection of Digital and Analogue Receivers. Complex switching and distribution that SWMBO cannot fathom. Nor me.

Not long now - should be available in the UK from 18.00, I believe.

It's possible there were some from a couple of weeks ago - I never use Automatic Updates, preferring to wait for the second Wednesday of each month and again on the fourth Wednesday: There were a couple of interim updates recently.

They certainly aren't available for Manual Download quite yet - and I'm positive that noon US Time is the trigger ...........

Edit: As of 17.50 local time ........ zilch.

I'll have a shufti after us Tea.

All Done

No problems at all, even with my 512k (On a good day) connection and busy Servers.

Well

Looks like it may have been a storm in a teacup, I have now installed all updates and have not seen any problems at all. I will wait for the lappy though just in case....

Nah!

I checked first that mine hadn't died of fright after last night's evolution.

She only uses it for Word Processing anyway - the main benefit is a full backup/spare system for me (But don't tell her I said that ............... )

Oh, no:

It's all part of the thrill of using a PC, having to spend so long correcting Micros**t software

The only issue I can find on the Win2k machine since the upgrade is the failure for Avast to scan incoming emails within Outlook Express.

My System: Mostly gathering dust cos there's no room for dishes here... :(

The Sleepy Hollow pollracle has spoken!

Can I ask, what exactly are these "critical" updates???

Is it the usual "prevents access through x program by malicious users", or is there a specific, major thing that they are correcting? Though now back on cable broadband, I'm still sceptical about downloading these updates...
