wireless networking

over xmas i was chatting to a few mates (after beer.. obviously )

we got talking about wireless networking and how good it would be if we all made a network (we all live pretty close)

i dont know much about it to be honest, can someone tell me..

a, how far can you reach with it?
b, can this distance be improved with the use of arials or such like?

its got to be better than buying 5 miles of cable lol

the quoted distance for wireless is 300m outdoor or 100m indoor, you'll find that it's only works well inside your own home or at the back of your garden, it's not great in your mates house next door even. Because of the walls and anything else in between that generating a magnetic field such as tv, hifi or metal bits like radiators. you'll notice that if some one stands in line between the wireless router and the pc, the tranmission will also drop. antenna wont improve much, even if you could find an extra long one. so there wireless is pretty useless outside your premises.

I think that one of the members on the forum made it up to a kilometre using an external antenna at each end, but that was purely from one point to another.
