I always keep an up to date dos version on a CDR. Start the machine up with a Win98SE boot disk, enabling CD support. Navigate to this little programme & it runs happily away from cd, with loads of options. Ideal for a machine which has been taken over by virus' which run at startup.

Might I just point out at this stage, that even the mutts nuts of programmes are only as good as the definitions you put into them?
In other words, UPDATE regularly...

If you want to run most of the Ad and Malware removers, all under one umbrella, then I can recommend http://www.hitmanpro.nl/. Until recently it was only available in Dutch but v2 is now available in English and works pretty well.

Not usual for me to compliment Bill Gates, but credit where it's due:
Windows Defender (beta 2)
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...e/default.mspx
is free and seems to work very well, with no noticeable system slowdown.
I still use Adaware and Spybot on a weekly basis though...

I tried it out, I think it is a good one. First of all, it automatically runs Spybot, Adaware and some others one after the other. I used to always run them both manually, it takes away the hassle. It even loads up the updates for them before scanning. It also frees up disc space by deleting all sorts of temp files.
It took me some time to understand how the settings are, but once sorted it works a treat. I even let it install a couple of the trial software such as Spydoctor and Spysweeper, I will uninstall them once the trial period is over.
So now I got it to scan with the following free programs:
Spybot, Lavasoft Adaware, Spywareblaster, Trend Micro and Hitman. When it finishes scanning you get a detailed log. Great program!

Fully agree T_G. I first saw it in Holland when it was only in Dutch. Sent an email to the Guy and soon after he replied saying here's the English version. Now I use this all the time.

My System: Always bet on black.

Hi, forgive my ignorance, but is there an advantage to running so many programs that (by their names) appear to scan for similar things? Having said that, I will install it on my home laptop tonight!

Yes, I thought the same. But whenever I run adaware, he finds stuff. Then I run Spybot, it finds other stuff, aslo the other way round. Then the CW shredder does things I am not sure what they are, but they look different to the others. As a matter of fact, I had a bit of nasty spyware called Trustin Scanner, and only the combined effort of them all took it out. I was actually impressed by the Spysweeper program, I wouldn't mind buying this one as it really does some good removals. I am still testing though

I used to run just Ad-aware and Spybot and even those 2 used to find slightly different things. This way you get more coverage.

I guess it all comes down to whether you trust a single vendor to capture all the potential spyware that's out there. I personally don't.

SUPERAntiSpyware

As most people, soon realise to their dismay, no single AntiMalware/Spyware/other program protects against, or cleans all possible infections.

Therefore I am not suggesting the following will either, but it is an excellent cleaning tool and after you run it, you might be pleasantly/unpleasantly surprised to see what it finds.

If you have problems, download the trial Professional version and run it, or if you just want to try it out, download the free version.

It does hug the system at startup and demands first Internet connection, but this is a small price to pay for the added security.

Help file, please read this before using.

My System: Pace 2200 Sky digibox with ftv card, Comag SL65 FTA sat receiver, 40cm Sky minidish, Setpal terrestrial receiver (for free uk tv only!).

I also use eweido. The free version deosn't check as it goes, you have to make it do a scan. However, there's various scan levels, for "complete" just start it before going to bed ..... and the updates are free.

Also ......... did anyone mention Winpatrol? Not a "scanner", but helps stop unwanted intrusions, especially web programmes installing themselves without your knowlege (downloadale from several freeware sites).

Also .... i have Norton Antivirus, and instead of paying Symmartec, I update the antivirus list with the free one regularly posted on majorgeeks.
