Meh! Don't! A mate asked me about two weeks ago about how he wants to buy a new laptop and whether he should hang-on for Vista. At the time I didn't have a clue how to advise him. I have had a whizz with RC2 (RTM) over the last couple of days and frankly I would recommend that everyone wait at least till June, neh! next Christmas. I am absolutely not a computer know-all - but christ, everything from my mainboard AMD drivers, to on-board audio driver, to firewall, to back-up program (normally all the stuff I install before I make a clean backup) - ended up being an EIGHT HOUR ordeal and hours of googling known companies for Vista ready nonsense. Mostly ending up in a dark place. No programs seem to be prepared. Mind, the only driver I successfully installed for Vista was the onboard Realtek Ac97 audio driver (download 28.?MB !!!). If you like Symantec/Norton - forget it. [read: most of my protection and backup is from these guys] Uuumm. The only thing I installed "a fresh" was a calculator widget. Messed about with the 3D window view, thought nothing of Aero - and then, some 24hrs later, finally ghosted XP back. Ramble Ends. .

I get offers of PC's and laptops everyday by Email. but most I have seen recently are offering XP laptops with a free upgrade to Vista when available.

My System: Technomate TM-1500CI+. Sky Digibox. TriAx 80cm Dish driven by a Moteck SG1200. Inverto 0.2db Silver Tech lnb. | I would not hurry to go to Vista. Microshi*e have said that they will not be releasing Windows XP service Pack 3 until "latter half of 2007" so Windows XP is not going to be disappearing any time soon. The fact that Microshi*e never seem to release anything on time probably means that SP3 won't be around until 2008. Personaly i don't think i will ever go to Vista. Linux is the way to go ! At least you don't need a mega PC to run it !

What a humbling experience I have just had with my Vista PC, I have spent three hours setting up the voice recognition side of it but once you get the hang of it well it is truly amazing...... I can understand that the average user may not be bothered going through all the messing around and training exercises but once you do yes it is impressive. I admit that you have to learn a new way of communicating with it so it is like learning a foreign language but the results are good. During the next couple of weeks I may try a few more adventurous things with it.

My System: 2xPace 430N, 1xNokia MM9800, 1xNokia 80cm Sat Dish, 1xGibertini 120cm, Big Fat Furry Puss | You getting paid to say that Topper Lets just say I like the tricks, the looks, the safety (TBC) et al of Vista. What I didn't like (and what a lot of other ordinary Joes are going to experience too) is that I could not simply update my OS from XP SP2 (like I seem to have been able to do with every other Windows OS). As I said before, when I attempted to install all of my fave programs, about 80% were not compatible (I was only advised by the compatibility prog (pre-install) to uninstall Norton Ghost).Users buying new Vista PC's will have to live with whats onboard, till companies roll-out either new versions of progs, resolve compatibility issues and those blessed drivers, drivers, drivers. OT: I am having a great time at the moment implementing new XP skins and desktop gadgets (windowblinds/desktopX). The experience, is tantamount to having Vista without all the crap that comes with it. And all my programs work WP11 and IE7 are installed too. What else could I be missing (apart from the hdd space vista gobbles up)??.

My System: Dreambox 7000, Skystar2 | I'll have Vista when there's a public crack. Good excuse to buy a new PC. I'm quite sure Vista will be no more secure (not crack-wise, but attack-wise) than XP. No crack, no Vista, and I'm sure most of the third-world feels the same.

I was not getting paid but I can see the benefits for the physically challenged with the voice activation although I did try posting on here with it and whilst it is true I am using a very old pc, it took ages to decide what I was trying to say and even then got it wrong. No it is the concept that I find amazing but what will be even more amazing will be if it does launch in January as I have not found anyone yet manufacturing install software and drivers for Vista.

My System: Mostly gathering dust cos there's no room for dishes here... :( The Sleepy Hollow pollracle has spoken! | At where I work, we're currently testing our stock systems to see if they work OK with Vista, but getting hold of a copy of it is near impossible at the moment, but I have a feeling we'll be sticking to XP for a looooong while yet...

My System: 2xPace 430N, 1xNokia MM9800, 1xNokia 80cm Sat Dish, 1xGibertini 120cm, Big Fat Furry Puss | MS have said it might take co.'s up to 2010 to think about/implement Vista (Source: Guardian).By which time, I am sure Linux will have more of a foothold and Apple's OSX will have moved on from land mammals to sea creatures. Musings: I gandered at a nice laptop yesterday from Acer that was 'Vista Ready' - then swiftly moved on to the next one in the line from ASUS (bit large for my likeing). .

My System: Technomate TM-1500CI+. Sky Digibox. TriAx 80cm Dish driven by a Moteck SG1200. Inverto 0.2db Silver Tech lnb. | Open SuSE 10.2 was released last Thursday and i must say i have found a huge improvement on speed. Just about everything is instant. No need to upgrade my PC! I have no reason to use Windoze any more as everything i could possibly want is on Open SuSE and its faster, more reliable and more secure than Windoze! And of course it's free! Download the installation disks from Open SuSE and install it on your computer. Hundreds if not thousands of other Linux distrobutions exist but i find Open SuSE very good. I guess Linux is not for everyone as it is quite a techy type of operating system but i think that is the way the world will go/is heading as Linux keeps getting easier to use and does not need a mega PC to run it. .

Plus, didn't find it any quicker than Windows XP.

Inverto 0.2db Silver Tech lnb. | Hi Rolf, Lindows are shooting themselves in the foot with their stratergy of free operating system software but charging for the applications. The 'real' Linux is much better and of course the operating system is free & so are the applications that you want to run. There are some applications that you pay for but most of the time you are paying the company for support etc. and not actually for the software. For home use i doubt very much you will have to pay for any software. If you have a spare PC or hard drive try dual booting with Windoze and Linux. Nothing ventured nothing gained.
