Benny Hill - Hero or Villain ?

Following on from the Mary Whitehouse programme - Filth - broadcast on BBC earlier this week, please find below some sketches from a man who fell victim to character assassination techniques employed by the Clean Up TV (now) MediaWatch group.

My System: Sky+, DB 7000s, Gemini 4.3 in flash, Var on USB stick. Transparent 80cm Dish, Moteck SG2100 DiseqC motor, lots of legacy gear. Meters: Satlook Digital NIT, Unaohm EP313, Swires Annie 204 Spectrum, Rover ST-4 Spectrum.

Very good in his time, always watched the shows.

Also had a huge following on US tv, I believe that they are still being shown.

My System: Various digiboxes, broken Nokia 9800S, numerous analogue boxes. My lovely little lappy, HP Omnibook 6100

A clever and funny man early in his career but later on he just went for lazy semi-smut and ended up as just plain unfunny.

Thumbs up hero

Hero, but his best stuff was from the 1970's and early 1980's.
Since a lot of his material was pantomime,he was even popular
in non-english speaking countries.

Morecambe and Wise got away with inuendo. Benny Hill got away with murder. Hero or Villain ? Ask the girls who were subject to his "interviewing" techniques and his "continuous assessment" as to whether or not they stayed in the show. I didn't find him particularly amusing, certainly not groundbreaking. So it's "villain", I guess for me.

I'll let you know once I dig out all the Betamax tapes I have with his ITV shows on them, but from what I've seen, some stuff's ok and funny, others are just him being an old perve...

You'll have to go back further than that to find any of his funny work IMHO.

At least the early seventies or even the sixties...

In one of his sketches he referred to the BT tower as the Post Office tower, dunno when it was renamed but I guess that was an 80's one...

I'd agree. I seem to remember (that far back?) in the sixites he used to produce only a few shows a year. Also, I don't suppose at that time he would have got away with the girlie stuff that later came to be the 'signature' of his shows. Still, what you find hilarious as a 10 year old doesn't always stand the test of time
