Big Brother in Israel

Big Brother will start in Ch 2 very soon.
I was hoping that this programme will never find it's way into my living room, but unfortunately it has also arrived here.
I read that Big Brother in Britain is now in it's fifth season.
Would be interesting to know what makes it so popular.

Yes A/S is correct although he never watches it

What makes it popular I suspect is the fly on the wall aspect and the positively explosive mix of 12 or more youngsters who all come from differing backgrounds, different credes and colours who can easily be tempted to O/D on alcohol and makes absolute pricks of themselves in front of a few million people. Often they find it difficult to look after themselves and cook meals and wash clothes having been spoonfed by their parents. The concept is a psychologists dream and some would say a viewers nightmare

I remember that Big Brother was shown on a German TV channel (Sat1 or RTL?) just after my installation of the Hot Bird 13E system in the late 90's
Am I correct in assuming that the concept originated in Germany and not from the UK or was it from the states?
If it indeed originated from Germany, then giving it an English title must have opened many international doors for it.

My System: Sky+ Pace v3, and before that analouge 80cm dish with Prima by Pace box pointed at 19.2e (not very imaginative then!)

BB actually started in the Netherlands, invented by John de Mol for his production company - Endemol.

Since then it's been exported around the globe, and as A/S says, it's currently in it's 9th season/series in the UK. The name, 'Big Brother', is the most common name for the programme, although it is different in some countries, i.e. in Spanish language countries it's 'Gran Hermano', in India it's 'Bigg Boss'.

The wikipedia article will tell you everything you could possible want to know - _http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Brother_(TV_series)

As for it's long term appeal to the viewer, I think it largely depends on just how well it's produced and how much the producers try to manipulate the outcome of task, votes, eviction etc. Unfortunately, it's become so bad on these two scores in the UK version that it has become unwatchable!

It is popular as a result of the power of Endemol and their piggyback advertising campaign.

It is less interesting than a circus show with people stricken by natural defects, but the gullible public watch and are brainwashed into parting with their cash by phone/txts, in much the same way as somebody is duped into looking up at the sky, just because 10,000 others are seen doing the same.

Humans thought lemmings commited suicide until recently, maybe it was a ploy by the sheep.
