I am sorry, I hated THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION

Having watched this on Film 4, I came to the conslusion it an over-long, boring, tedious, over-acted and a very very very very very
OVER-RATED movie.

Hell knows what goes through the minds of people to vote
this the 2nd best film EVER!! I first saw the cut down version lasting
1 hour 25 minutes, and it was still too long.

I wouldn't mind but it's so drawn-out, fanciful and pathetic. The
things that happen in that prison would never happen, just because some
nerdy bank manager has "hope..." Give me a break! Which soap opera did
that sad line come from!

No wonder it was initially ignored, and it
should be continued to be ignored. Robbins, who is accused and wrongly
convicted for the murders of his wife and her lover, never ages. At one
point he HAS TO "remind" us he's been in jail for 12 years, because it
only looks like a week.

Yet did you see the way he really changed in 12 years from 1994 to
2006. He looks a much older man. And of course he does, he's 12 years
older!! In the Shamshank Dedeption he never aged one day in 12 years,
and his hair is even cut the same style.

Even when we then go forward something like 20 years, he still looks
the same, never aged at all, apart from a few bluey grey hairs at the
sides. And after he escapes (after 20 years of tunneling through thick
concrete with a a small screwdriver), he meets up with his old buddy
Freeman, who got out of jail legally. And get this, BOTH look younger
than when they first went in.

By my reckoning Tim Robbins should now be about 70, and Morgan Freeman
in his early 80s, yet both after serving their time still look barely
40.

And what a load of talkative rubbish. The most boring over-hyped-up
film in history. Complete twaddle. God knows how on earth I watched all
of it, but I did if for a bet, 'cause I cannot stand it. Wasn't worth
a UK tenner anyway!! My vote, 2 out of 10 for a mediocre drama.

Get a life, if this is the "best" film you've even seen. Better still,
get a cinema ticket!!!! Or rent a DVD. And more than one!!

I know people won't agree, but still, I think it's crp.

You're entitled to your opinion and I respect it.

I think it's a great film, it was missed at the box office but when the DVD came out people watched it and hired/bought it and that's how it became a best seller.

That's how other great films rise to the top...

Take 'Amelie' a French film that had limited appeal. It was included in the first DVD catalogue sent out using the new postal rental format in the US.
Once people had seen it they told their friends and it became the biggest circulated foreign DVD in the States - People power.

As for Shawshank, I think it's a very well constructed story (and the good guy wins in the end). Did you like 'The Green Mile'?

Having both films several times, I bought the DVDs. Can watch them over and over.

P.S. If your looking for other great foreign films (my opinion) check out...

'Jean De Florette' and 'Manon Des Sources' a duet
'Cinema Paradiso'
and animation classic - 'Belleville Rendez-vous'

My System: Sky+, DB 7000s, Gemini 4.3 in flash, Var on USB stick. Transparent 80cm Dish, Moteck SG2100 DiseqC motor, lots of legacy gear. Meters: Satlook Digital NIT, Unaohm EP313, Swires Annie 204 Spectrum, Rover ST-4 Spectrum.

I certainly enjoyed Shawshank, not one of the best films I've seen, but still excellent and would watch it again. Amelie in original language with subtitles is an enchanting film, seldom seen better, I guess that my favourite arthouse film is still Bernardo Bertolucci's 1900, in my opinion has no equal.

PS. On thinking about it, have just searched on Ebay and have just bought a copy, it's a long time since I watched it last.

NO OFFENCE TO THE GUYS ON HERE, I TOTALLY RESPECT YOUR OPINIONS AND ADVICE, but this is what I wrote on the Internet Movie Database under my name eye.sea

And this is not directed to anyone on www.satellites.co.uk!!!! Why, because you're all not blind to other films.

SO RESPECT.......

ON IMDB:

"OK, so what is the story about? NOTHING.

OK, a successful bank manager gets imprisoned for a crime he didn't commit; okay, done A MILLION TIMES BEFORE AND BETTER.

He gets assaulted, both physically and sexually: DONE A MILLION TIMES BEFORE.

He escapes from jail: DONE A MILLION TIMES BEFORE.

And all done better before.

What gets me is the infantile story of this guy making the BRITISH LIBRARY out of a prison. That is so pathetic and weak, it would not have been considered in Cagney's day. Oh, James Cagney, you probably do not know him. He was in one of the greatest gangster/prison films ever, "Angels with Dirty Faces" (1938), miles better than this SHAM-shaw Redemption tripe.

Or do you lot not watch black and white films?

And while you're all expanding your film knowledge, check out:

Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974)
Escape from Alcatraz (1979)
Papillon (1973)
The Great Escape (1963)
Road to Perdition (2002)

Just a few GREAT films, movies that SHAM-shaw redemption cannot hold a candle to. And the person who replied, you say you "do not care" what I think, yet, WITH RESPECT, you say nothing to underline why you feel SHAM-shaw is so brilliant. It's supposed to be about hope...

What hope?

* That he spent 20 years tunnelling through thick concrete to get to the sewer and escape? LOL.
* That he gained "protection" from the prison guards by giving them banking and insurance advice, and in so doing gaining beer for his fellow prisoners.
* That he turned the prison into The British Library!
* That he escaped, looking younger than when he went in jail 40 years ago?

Yeah, hopeLESS, more like."

Like I say, this is not intended to anyone on here!

If he were not a wizard, from head down to the root, you would have got to worry-your DB only boots

Tim Robbins character (in the film) enters the prison is 1946 and escapes in 1966.

He is his mid-20's when he enters the prsion.

It was a small rock hammer not a screwdriver.

what a load of talkative rubbish

I totally agree with you. It's a load of pretentious rubbish dressed up to win an Oscar.

The fact that Steven King has something to do with it makes it very suspect. The only decent film that his works have ever spawned is Carrie. Anything else is a warning to stay away.

guys you've got to remember these stories were originally books and like most good books do not transfer well onto the big screen as a lot of poetic licence is taken..I think apart from Carrie, the green mile (best film ever) and the Shawshank redemption most of Stephen Kings books that made it onto the screen were bloody awful..just my tuppence worth

Has anyone seen, "The Death of the Monster From Hell, From Planet X, In the Light of the Seventh Murder of the Matroid Monster From Zerux"?

Nope?

Nah, doesn't exist...LOL. But I thought I'd make it on a shoestring budget of just 20p, using one of the very first Betamax "handheld" 200 pound weight camcorders.

I always fancied myself as an Edward D Wood, ie, Plan Nine From Outer Space.

But then again, I am a transvestite, so me and my good old mate Eddie do have something in common.

And by the way, I am currently casting the lead role of the monster from hell, ie, "The Death of the Monster From Hell, From Planet X, In the Light of the Seventh Murder of the Matroid Monster From Zerux".

So any 17 feet tall members on here are quite welcome to come to the auditions! Thanks.
