Did DMAC/D2MAC really give poor pics?

Hi.

I have had a number of DMAC/D2MAC decoders ranging from old BSB receiver mod, Churchil Multimac to Monterrey upgrade. All the receivers gave poor pics, very grainy bad video levels. There was no problem with signal strengh.

Was I just unlucky, or did MAC suffer from this problem? Shame to see it go, although I've not bothered with it for years

I used a Uniden UST92 for years, and the picture did depend on the receiver used to loop through the decoded pictures. If it was SCARTed directly to the TV though it was of very high quality.

There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness"

Yes that was the problem, even the professional Tandberg decoders i installed suffered from picture quality problems.

The D/D2/B-Mac system was good on paper, but in real life it performed bad.

I remember when TV3 and TV1000 went to D2-mac, the picture was much worse and most complained about it.

I remember when I did some work at TV3 many years ago. I pointed out that the pics looked awful, but the engineers did not agree. I found it funny to point out that the subtitles on TV3 Sverige did not match the programme lol. No one in the MCR understood scandinavian langauges Oh and getting the teleport to turn of the HPA'S on Friday nights at around 23:00 (uk) to allow the "other" programmes to broadcast out of Danmark (I think)

I had a pace mss200 not the uk version videocrypt but the swedish version d/d2mac eurocrypt and the pic qulity was amazing we sold a few of them in our shop, what i found was that unless you had a d2mac receiver the pic was crap i found this also with people who where using a sat receiver connected to a stand alone mac decoder

My System: Dreambox DM7020 // 1.25m Gibertini dish // MTI BlueLine LNB 0.6dB

I somewhat agree with that the picture quality was poor. BUT (and it's a big but) it really depended on the channel. My first D2MAC decoder was a Philips FilmNet (aka known as BDE353 at a later date) and picture quality on FilmNet+ and later FilmNet 1 and Canal+ channels were very good. Grain was apparent but you had to look very hard for it. TV1000's and TV3's were of very poor quality. But other channels like NRK1/2 and TV2 Norge at 1W were quite decent. I also had an Amstrad SR650 with built in D2MAC decoder and the picture quality on that wasn't as good as on the Philips but still good on better quality channels mentioned above.

Comparatively - look at compression levels you get on majority of digital channels today. Nothing but Lego blocks! Bring back D2MAC any day!!!!

My System: Dream7020 and AZ Elite

Can´t really complain My opinion was that it was OK

Had a SKY decoder and the skymovie was not better

Used a triac decoder I loved that time, easier to break any codes

Used the Billeberga Nordic Worked OK

Only time the picture quality was good when TV3 sent in B-MAC.

After that they started in D2-MAC two years later or something...

French TV was outstanding via D2mac on TDF satellites

I used to watch the French wide screen broadcasts on the TDF satellites and the picture quality was first class.
The France 2 channel would switch to France Supervision for these wide screen programmes and covered sports, culture, etc.
I had an Amstrad SRD600 and this was a brilliant piece of kit (for the time) and this was far better than the converted BSB boxes.

The Germans also had some high quality TV output on 3Sat and Sat1.
